.-INVEzYNTDR;
UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.,
BENJAMIN G. LUTHER, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS. n
BELT SHIFTER AND TIGHTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 661,018, dated October 30, 1900. Original application filed September 1'7, 1898, Serial No. 691,235. Divided and this application iled October 30, 1899. Serial To all 'Lf/72,077@ t may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN G. LUTHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester', in the State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement iii Belt Shifters and 'Iighteners for Cone-Pulleys, of which the followingisaspecification.
My invention consists in the combination of belt-tightening means with the belt-shiftf: ing means, as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side view of a pair of cone-pulleys provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 represents a section taken in the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a top view.l Fig. 4 represents a detail view showing a portion of the traversing mechanism fol` the belt? shifter.
In the drawings, A represents the shaft upon which is secured the driving cone-pul ley B, and to the shaft C is secured the opposite cone-pulley D, which is driven from the cone-pulleyB by means of the belt E. The belt-shifter F is arranged to slide on the rock-shaft G, provided at its opposite sides with grooves e, adapted to receive the feathers f, held in the hub o. of the belt-shifter. To the opposite arms b b, extending from the hub o, are secured the roller-stands c c, carrying the belt guiding and tightening rollers I I, which both bear upon the same side of the belt, and traversing lmovement is imparted to the belt-shifter F by means of the sprocket-wheel J, the endless chain K, and the hand-wheel L, secured upon the shaft M, as shown in Fig. 3. To the end of the rock-y shaft G is secured the arm N, as shown in Fig. 3, and the outer end of the arm N isl (No model.)
thus provided with a belt tightening or loosening mechanism arranged under thecontrol of the operator of the machine.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination of the cone-pulleys,and the rock-shaft, with the sliding belt-shifter held upon the rock-shaft and provided at its opposite ends with the beltguiding rollers adapted to bear upon the same side of the belt, means for imparting lateral movement to the belt-shifter, and means for imparting rotary movement to the rock-shaft to cause the tightening or loosening of the belt, substan tially as described.
2. The combination of the cone-pulleys,and Vthe rock-shaft, with the sliding belt-shifter held upon the rock-shaft and provided at its opposite ends with the belt-guiding rollers adapted to bear upon the same side of the belt, the endless chain, and sprocket-Wheel for moving the belt-shifter laterally, the arm secured to the rock-shaft and provided with the catch, and the notched bar adapted for the engagement of the catch, substantially as described.
' BENJAMIN G. LUTHER.
