SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 669,854, dated March 12, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of EastJordan, in the county of Charlevoix and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Loading Device for Railroad-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a newand improved loading apparatus for placing logs and other articles upon railway-cars and other vehicles in a very simple and economical manner and without requiring the cars to be side-tracked, the arrangement permitting of running the empty cars under the apparatus or away from-the same when loaded without disturbing the loading apparatus.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as
will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which 2 5 similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement with part broken out, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The improved apparatus consists, essentially, of aplurality of uprights or posts A, adapted to be set on the ground on opposite sides of the track-rails, and said uprights are engaged by keepers B, secured to the sides of a platform 0, carrying a boiler D, an engine E, a hoisting-drum F, and a derrick G for moving the log or other article upon the car H to be loaded, said car being arranged to run on the track-rails under the platform 0 4.0 without interfering with the uprights A or the said platform. On the inner faces of the uprights A are secured vertically disposed racks I, in mesh with pinions J, secured on longitudinally-extending shafts J, journaled 5 in suitable bearings on the platform 0, and on said shafts J are secured bevel gear-wheels J in mesh with bevel gear-wheels K on the ends of a transverse shaft K, journaled in suitable hearings on the platform 0. A gearwheel L is mounted to slide on and to turn Serial No. 20,831. (No model.)
with the shaft K and is adapted to be shifted on said shaft by ashifting-lever N, under the control of the operator, to move the gearwheel L in and out of mesh with a pinion O on the shaft of the drum F, previously referred to. On the shaft K is also secured a ratchet-wheel P, engaged by a dog P' for holding the shaft K against return movement.
When it is desired to use the device, the platform 0 is placed on the track, the posts or uprights A extending in the keepers B, and now in order to raise the platform O,with the parts carried thereon, it is necessary for the operator to swing the shifting-lever N and move the gear-wheel Lin mesh with the pinion O. When the latter is now rotated by the operator starting the engine E and the hoisting-drum F, then a rotary motion is transmitted to the shaft K and by the gearwheels K and J to the shafts J, so that their pinions J travel on the racks I, and the platform 0 is raised, with the parts mounted thereon. When the platform 0 has been raised a desired distance, then the empty car H can be run under the platform, as shown in Fig. 1. The lowering device, consisting of the drum F and derrick G, is now actuated in the usual manner to load the car H with logs and other articles and substances, and when the car H has been partly loaded and it is desired to load the car still more then the platform C, with its parts mounted thereon, is further raised on the uprights by the operator again moving the gear-wheel L in mesh with the pinion O and starting the drum F, as previously explained, for causing the platform 0 to move upward on the uprights A, as above explained.
It is understood that after the platform has been raised to the desired height the operator swings the shifting-lever N to move the gearwheel L out of mesh with the pinion 0, so that the hoisting-drum F can be used for hoisting purposes without interfering with the position of the platform on the uprights A. It is further understood that by the ratchet-wheel P and the dog P the shaft K is held against return movement, so that the platform remains locked in the adjusted position. I
Instead of asingle shaft K two independent shafts may be employed and geared with the drum to turn the shafts J independently one of the other, if desired;
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- 1. The combination with uprights having racks, of keepers slidably engaging said uprights, a platform carrying said keepers and supporting the loading devices, means for actuating the same, longitudinally-extending shafts journaled on said platform and carrying pinions in mesh with said racks, a transverse shaft journaled on said platform and geared with said longitudinal shafts, a gear- Wheel mounted to slide and to turn With said transverse shaft and adapted to be thrown in mesh with a pinion on the shaft of the loading device, and means for shifting said gear- 20 Wheel on the transverse shaft, as set forth.
2. A loading-machine, comprising a platform, a motor carried thereon, a transverse shaft geared with the motor to be driven thereby, longitudinal shafts respectively located at the sides of the platform and geared with the transverse shaft, keepers carried at the side edges of the platform, uprights slidably mounted in the keepers, racks carried on the uprights, and pinions carried by the longitudinal shafts and meshed with the racks.
