FIREPROOF FLOORING.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 669,801, dated March 12, 1901.
Application filed January 12,1901. Serial No. 43,034. (No model.)
To cr/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES A. MONAMEE, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Cam bridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Floorings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ireproof flooring in buildings; and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the invention, showing the metal bands or wires secured to the clips on the I-beams before being embedded inthe concrete or plastic material. Fig. 2 represents a cross-section on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1, showing the said metal bands or wires embedded in the concrete or plastic material. Fig. 3 represents an eni larged top plan View of one of the I-beams and clips ready to receive the metal bands or wires. Fig. 4 represents a cross-section on the line 4 4 in Fig. 3, showing the bands or wires connected to said clips. Fig. 5 represents a detail top plan view of one 'of the clips, and Fig. 6 represents a cross-section on the line 6 6 shown in Fig. 5.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In the drawings, A A represent the usual metal I licor-beams employed in reproof iioorings. To the opposite edges of the upper flanges of said metal I-beams I attach the metal clips B B, each one having at its outer end a hook h, adapted to be hooked onto the upper flange of the I-beam, as shown. The free ends of said clips are provided with side recesses or notches b b", as shown.
C C are metal bands or wires, the ends of which may be attached to the walls of the building in any suitable or convenient manner, such wall-connecting device being, however, not shown in the drawings, as it does not form an essential part of my invention.
The lnetal bands or wires C are placed in and interlocked with the side notches h h, as shown in the drawings, and looped between the floor-supporting I-beams, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
In practice I prefer to attach at intervals to the metal bands or wires C C the transverse metal bands or wires D D, as shown in Figs. l and 2, so as to hold tne metal bands or wires C C at proper distances apart. After the said metal bands or wires C C (with or without the transverse bands or wires D D) have been placed in position and interlocked with the clips B B on the metal I-beams A A, as shown, I place beneath the lower flanges of said I- beams suitable temporary boards E E (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2) and till the spaces between the I-beams with suitable concrete or plastic material F F, in which the metal bands or wires C C are caused to be embedded, as shown, and after said plastic material is set and hardened I remove the supportingboards E, thus causing the plastic fireproof mass F to be supported on the metal bauds or wires C C, and as the latter are attached by means of the clips B B to the individual I-beams in the series it will be seen that any sagging of the mass of plastic material between the I-beams is entirely prevented, thus making avery strong and durable lireproof liooring After the fiooring has thus been made I place on top of it the usual wooden door-boards, which are, however, not shown in the' drawings.
By the use of the notched and hooked metal clips B B, I am enabled to build up the flooring in a very simple, rapid, and strong manner, and by the use of said clips I may readily arrange the supporting bands or wires C C nearer or farther apart, as circumstances may require. A reproof flooring thus constructed can be made by unskilled labor in a very quick manner, as all that is needed to do is to place the notched metal clips B B onto the opposite upper anges of the I-beams and interlock the looped metal bands or wires C C with the notches in the said metal clips previous to filling the spaces between the I-beams with the plastic material, which is thus caused to be supported on said looped metal bands or wires, for the purpose stated.
What I Wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is- The herein-described ireproof flooring, consisting of parallel metal I-beams A, A, combined with hooked metal clips B, B, adapted to be hooked and attached to the upper oppo- IOO site edges of the I-beanis, and having side my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnotohes b', b, adapted to receive a series of nesses.
looped lateral metal bands or Wires C, C, ernbedded Within a, mass of concrete or plastic 5 material substantially as and for the purpose JAMES A. MCNAMEE.
