ATEN'I rricn.
WILLIAM VAUDT, OF VANMETER, IOWA.
FOLDING SUPPORT FOR WASHBOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 669,565, dated March 12, 1901.
Application filed August 13, 1900. Serial No. 26,704. (No model.)
-To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM VAUDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Van meter, in the county of Dallas and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Supports for Washboilers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of simple, durable, and inexpensive construction designed to connect a handle with a washboiler and at the same time to connect a folding support with a washboiler, which support is designed to provide a rest upon which the weight of a washboiler may be borne when the contents of the boiler are being poured from the boiler; and my object is, further, in this connection to provide a support of this class which may be easily and quickly folded to a position flat against the surface of the washboiler when not in use, so that the support will not interfere with the handling, packing, or storing of washboilers.
My invention consists in certain details in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows in perspective a portion of a washboiler having my attachment connected therewith and the support illustrated in its open position. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the folding support applied to a portion of the washboiler and showing the support in its open position ready for use. Fig. Bshows a vertical central sectional view of the same with the support in its folded position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference-numeral 10 to indicate the portion of the washboiler shown.
11 indicates the base of my attachment. At the top of this base is an outwardly-projecting portion (indicated by the numeral 12) to receive the folding wire handle 13 of the usual construction. Near the lower end of the base are two perforated lugs 14, and between these lugs I have pivoted the folding support 15. This support is preferably flat on its under surface and is provided with a central opening 16 for purposes hereinafter made clear. Between the perforated lugs 14 are two stops 17. These stops are shaped to engage the top surface of the support 15 when said support reaches a horizontal position, and they serve to prevent the support from moving upwardly beyond a horizontal position. At the outer end of the support 15 is a short handle 18.
The reference-numeral 19 indicates a contractile coil-spring, one end of which is secured to the base 11 between the stops 17, and the other end is fixed to the support 15 near its central portion. This springis so arranged that during'the movement of the support 15 from a position at right angles to the base 11 to its position engaging the exterior of the washboiler the said spring will be drawn outwardly to its greatest length at a point midway between these extremes of its movement. In other words, the spring will pass a dead-centerwhen at either limit of its movement, and hence the same spring will serve to hold the support upwardly when open and in close engagement with the wash boiler when it is in its folded position.
When in use, the support is drawn outwardly to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Then the operator may carry the washboiler by means of the handles and may place the support 15 upon the top of another vessel into which he desires to pour the contents of the washboiler. Then he may release his hold upon the handle 13 and elevate the opposite end of the washboiler, thereby pouring its contents into the other vessel. Heretofore there has been considerable difficulty in pouring the contents of a washboiler when full of hot water into another vessel, because with a vessel of oblong shape the water cannot conveniently be poured over the long side of the boiler, and no means have been provided heretofore for supporting the shorter end of the washboiler upon another vessel while pouring, and obviously the operators hands cannot hold the vessel in position while pouring. Furthermore, when not in use the support may be folded to lie flat against the side of the washboiler and not interfere with the packing or storing of the washboiler.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is
1. An improved folding support for washboilers, comprising in combination, a base designed to be permanently secured to a washboiler, a support hinged to the base, stops to limit the upward movement of the support, and means for holding the support in position substantially at right angles to the Washboiler, and against said stops, or in a position in engagement with the side of a washboiler,
substantially as set forth.
