TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that we, JOHN BURT and A. vM. MILLER, of Sturgis, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Trial-Squares; and we hereby declare that the following is a true and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section, and

The nature of our invention consists in having two blades a small distance apart, and filling the space with a. number of small slotted pieces, whose tops and bottoms shall be square with those of the blades, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter described.

The fatigue consequent upon squaring a low surface with the ordinary trial-square is very sensibly felt by all carpenters. To obviate this difliculty we propose constructing a square which shallindicate from the top of the blades whether or not a given surface is relatively true or square.

A A represent blades let into the bandleB. A small space is left between the blades in order to insert the slotted pieces e e e, which should work easily in their places. The top and bottom of each pieceshould be square with that of the blades. Said pieces are retained in their places by means of small bolts or pins 2' i i, passing through the slots, as seen in fig. 1. Thus it will be observed that when the square is placed upon an uneven surface the pieces e e e will rest upon the lower portions, as seen in fig. 2, and will indicate from the top of the square the true and'exact depressions, and thereby save the operator the trouble and fatigue of bending down to ascertain the condition of his work from time to time.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The employment of slotted pieces e e e, substantially in the manner described, for the purpose of indicating at the top of the square the condition of the work.
