ABRAHAM' s. JACOBS,` or sT. LOUIS, MISSOURI. l Letters faim: No. 66,2347, and .my 1o, 1867,
IMPno-VBD oAR.
TO ALL WI-IOM- IT MAY CONCERN: 4
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM S. JAc0Bsof St. LouisSt.'Iliouis county, Missouri, have inventeda new and useful improvement in Oers; and I'do hereby declaro thatthe' following is a full, ,clear, and exact description-4 thereof, which' Will'enabie others skilled in the art to make and use the same,'rei`erencc being had to 'the accom- Ranying drawings, forminf.' part 'of this specification, in which- Figure represents a planor top view of my invention. I Figuro 2 is n detail vsectional vie`w of thesame, the plane' ofisection being indicated by the linea: x, iig. 1.` Similar' letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.l I v This invention relates` to-such a 'construction 'of oars, that by their use 'the rowers will be enabled to sit lwith their faces towards thc bow of the boat; the course of the bontcan thereby be betterregulated and easier controlled than'by the ordinary cars. v I v The invention consists in'the use of a lever, which is'applied tomxow-lock on 'the'gunwale of a boat in the sa'me manner as the'cir,.and of which but a. short piece projects outward beyond the boat. The o'uter end of rthis lever is connected by means of a hinged rod ,with the-inner end of the oar. l
j" The'ioar is of usnai construction, and is held on a rovi-'lookin the usual manner. The handles only are -left cti'. The aiforesnidlevers are the handles, and can be as easily moved, in all directions, in the same manner, :and/'with no-moreldicnlty, Ias.theordinar-y 1oars.Bytbe-nsoo i`. thesedctached v handles the outer arm of the i oar will" be moved" in the samefdire'otion as the handle, z', .','when'the end of the handle is moved forward, the I' outer end of theonl"` is 'also moved forward,.whilehere'tofore the inner and outer end of the oar moved in oppo-V site directions.v `Thuis lthe position of the rower must be 'reversed in thc'boat, as the motion of the handle is l reversed, to what it nestor-making the sme stroke on the4 ordinary oars, and the rowers are therefore enabled to s'it with their faces -toV the bfow'o'i the boat. Y
Are'pr'esents an oar of usual construction, which `strings on a row-loch, a, on the gnnwale of a boat., as shown.4 The `row-look may be made inthe shape of a simple pin, or 'consist of a series of jointed parts, as may be desirf'nl.` The oar is made without handle, a fer-rule, b, beingsecnred'to its inner end. B is s.- short lever or bar, 'which is securcd'to the gunwal'c in the same manner as. th'e-oa-r, it 'turning on a row1ock, e, of suitable construction.' The outer end of' this :lever is'but short, and is provided with a ferrule, d, from which two ears or lugs' e project, between which thoend'of arod, C, is pivotcd. The other 'end of the rod C is pivoted to ears or arms f on the ferruleb, `as4 shown; and thus the rod C forms a connection between the outer endeof the bar i B and the inner endof the oaixAe The arrows in iig. 1' indicate the r'espectivemotions of the oar and handle requisite for makingtbe driving-stroke, and it will thereby be seen that the rowers must be seated with their faces to the bow of the boat, if the handles are to bc pulled for'the driving-stroke. v l
' Having thus described m'y invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction andarrange'ment of the oar A, pivoted ata to the-.gunwzle of the `boat, its inner end provided with ferrule b, pivoted to the- 'connecting-rod G, 'extending diagonally across said gundale, whose outer end is pivoted to the ferrnle d at the oter end of the short -1ever-B, which is p i-votedto the 4row-locks c, as herein'setiforth, all operatingindependently of the oar-on the opposite side-of the boat, as herein s'et forth, for the p urpos'erpeoied. l '1 v A. soAooBs,
