SULKYnPLO.
SPECIFICATION forming pare of Letters Patent No. 668,458, dated February '19, 190i. Application filed November 17, 1900. Serial NoE 36,891. (No model.)
To all whom it mln/y concern:
Beit known that l, NEWELL SANDERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, Hamiltoncounty, Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky-Plows, of which the following is a specification. j
My invention is an improvementin d-isk or sulky plows, and it relates particularly to the furrow-wheel thereof and the means for raising and lowering the saine.
To this end the invention includes the combin-ation, with a pivoted beam and furrow- Wheel carried thereby, of means for supporting the devices for raising and lowering said wheel, said devices including a pivoted lever and means for holding said lever in a predetermined position relative to the seat mounted on the plow-frame irrespective of the angular position of the front beam and furrow- Wheel.
It further includes the details of construction to be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rotary-disk plow, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the same.
The plow selected for the purpose of illustrating the invention is of ordinary construction, having a single, frame-bar 1, from the front end of which a lateral extension in the form of a plate 2 projects, which supports and to which is pivoted the end of the front beam 3. To the under side of this beam, secured transversely thereof by means which will permit of its longitudinal adjustment, is a bar 4, one end of which is fitted in a socket 5, forming a part of a casting 6. Through a vertical sleeve forming an integral part of the casting, the opening in which is square in crosssection, the cranked end of the furrow-wheel axle 7 is guided. The portion of this axle which fits within the sleeve is square to t the latter snugly, so that the furrow-wheel is held against swinging movement on 'the vertical portion of its axle as a center. The axle has an extension above the sleeve, cylindrical in cross-section, upon which a collar 8 is swiveled, being held against longitudinal displacement in a suitable manner. This collar is connected by links 9 to a lever 10, the front end of which is pivoted to the quadrant 1l and the handle of which extends into proximity to the seat of the operator, a spring-catch to engage the teeth of the segment being provided, as usual. The quadrant is secured between lugs 12 and 12, projecting froni the casting 6, by a vertical pivot 13, extending through said lugs and upon which the quadrant turns. A link 14 is pivotally secured at one end to the rear part of the quadrant and at its opposite end hooked into one of a series of holes in plate 2.
It will be apparent that as the plow is turned and the beam swings on its pivot 15, carrying the furrow-wheel with it,the link 14 will cause quadrant l1 to turn on its pivot 1 3, and thereby always maintain the lever in a position parallel with the front part of frame-oar 1 and with its handle close to the seat of the plow. The movement is that of a parallel frame, the members of which are the plate 2, the quadrant 11, the link 14, the beam 3, bar 4, and casting 6. The series of holes in plate 2 are provided to permit the link 14 to be adjusted to correspond to any adjustment of the furrow-wheel toward and from the beam. A link with a turnbuckle may be provided.
In plows of this character as ordinarily constructed the lever for raising the furrow- Wheel is vertically disposed, because when arranged horizontally it would strike the legs of the operator in the turning movement. The objection to a vertical lever is that it is always beyond the reach of the operator.
I claim- 1. The combination in a sulky-plow with a seat, a pivoted beam, and a furrow-wheel carried thereby, of means for raising and lowering said wheel carried by the aXle thereof, said means including a lever and means for maintaining said lever in a predetermined position in relation to said seat irrespective of the position of said beam, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a sulky-plow comprising a frame, a pivoted beam and a furrow-Wheel carried thereby, of means for raising and lowering said furrow-Wheel comprising a segment and lever pivoted thereto,Y and means for giving said lever and segment a IOO parallel movement in relation to said frame as said beam is swung on its'pivot in turning the plow, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a sulky-plow having a frame, a beam pivoted thereto and a furrow-wheel, of means for raising and lowering` said wheel comprising a toothed segment and pivoted lever and double pivoted link connections between said segment and said frame, substantially as described. Y
4. The combination with a sulky-plow comprising a frame, a beam pivoted thereto and a furrow-wheel, of a pivoted segment, a lever, and a link connection between said segment and frame, substantially as described. 5. The combination with a sulky-plow comprising a frame, a beam pivoted thereto and a furrow-wheel, of a pivoted segment, a lever, and a link connection between said segment and frame, said connection being adjustable, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a sulky-plow comprising a frame, a pivoted beam and a furrow- Wheel, of means for raising and lowering said wheel comprising a pivoted segment and lever, and a link carried by said segment adapted to engage said frame at different points, substantially as described.
7 lThe combination in a sulky-plow having a frame, a pivoted beam, and a furrow-wheel, of a rod secured transversely of the beam, a casting secured to the end thereof, a vertical sleeve forming a part of the casting, a crankaxle carrying said wheel passing through said sleeve, a segment pivoted to said casting, a lever pivoted to the segment, a connection from the lever to said axle for shifting the latter, and a link connection between said 'segment and said frame, substantially as described.
8. The combination in a sulky-plow having a frame, a pivoted beam and a f urrow-wheel, of a rod secured to the beam, a cast-ing having a socket to receive said rod, a vertical sleeve forming a part of said casting,a cranked furrow-wheel axle guided through said sleeve, a segment pivoted at its forward end to said casting, a lever carried thereby, a connection from said lever to said axle for raising and lowering the latter and a link connection between the rear part of said segment and said frame, substantially as described.
9. The combination in a sulky-plow having a frame, a pivoted beam and a furrow-wheel, of a rod secured to the beam and adjustable transversely thereof, a casting having a socket to receive said rod, a vertical sleeve forming a part of said casting, the opening therethrough being square in cross-section, a cranked axle carrying said furrow-wheel having a portion passing through said sleeve and snugly fitting the same and an extension above said sleeve, a segment pivoted at its forward end to said casting, a lever pivoted to the segment, a 'link connection between said lever and the extension of said furrow-wheel axle, and an adjustable link connection between the rear portion of said segment and said frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NEWELL SANDERS.
