BARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,906, dated February 12, 1901.
Application filed July 13, 1900.
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK J. HANCHETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago. in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Package Carrier, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to parcel-carriers, and relates particularly to a carrier especially designed for carrying large heavy packages or articles, as watermelons and the like.
One object of the invention is to provide a carrier for this purpose which will embody the features of adequate strength, efficiency forits designed purpose, simplicity, and cheapness of manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide a carrier which admits of being folded into a small space for convenience and economy in shipment.
A parcel-carrier of my invention consists of the various features, combinations of fea tures, and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings a parcel-carrier of my invention is fully illustrated.
Figure l is an end view of a parcel-carrier of my invention, showing a watermelon in diagram. Fig. 2 is aside view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section, of a carrier of my invention folded or nested; and Fig. 4 is a detail section through the pivot-joint thereof.
A parcel-carrier of my invention consists of a skeleton frame comprising a desired number (not less than three) of bow-shaped members A A,secured togetherat a, which when in operative adjustment are disposed as shown members A diverging from each other downwardly and the member A extending upwardly to form a handle. In Fig. 1 of the drawings a watermelon A is indicated in diagram supported in said parcel-carrier. The members A A are preferably pivoted together and are of such relative lengths that they may be nested or folded together in the manner shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings for convenience and economy in packing and shipping them. Owing to its lightness and cheapness the members A A are preferably made of wood and are made as light as consistent with necessary strength. My invention, however, contemplates making them of anyother suit- 1 Serial No. 23,439. (No model.)
able material. Preferably, also, metal washers a, are secured to the outside of both pivotbearings a, which will operate to prevent the pivot-pin from pulling through the connected members A A.
When the members A A of the receptacle are pivoted, the members A may be secured together by means of a string a or the like, which will operate to limit the angular divergence thereof as desired and will prevent them from opening and allowing a package supported thereon from falling through them.
My invention also contemplates providing brads a in one or both of the members A, which prevent the package from shifting in said carrier in an obvious manner. By providing s uch brads a only on the member which is on the inside when said carrier is folded, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, said brads will in no way interfere with nesting or folding said carrier.
I claim- 1. A package-carrier comprising at least three members all pivoted together, one designed to extend upwardly to form a handle and the others to extend downwardly at an angle relatively to each other, substantially as described.
2. A package-carrier comprising at least three members pivoted together, one designed to extend upwardly to form a handle and the others downwardly and at an angle relatively to each other, said members being of different lengths so that they may be nested or folded together, substantially as described.
3. A package-carrier comprising at least three members all pivoted together, one adapted to extend upwardly to form a handle and the others downwardly and at an angle relatively to each other, different lengths so that they may be nested or folded together and brads on the inner down weirdly-disposed mem ber adapted to prevent shifting of a package contained in said carrier, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of July, 1900.
FRANK J. HAN OHETT.
