CHARLES A. ELTON, ()F HILLSBORO, OHIO. Letters Patent NO. 66,691, (and July 16, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOUGHS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
-Be it known that I, CHARLES A. ELTON, of Hillsboro, in the county of Highland, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ploughs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specifioation- Figure 1 being a side view of my improved plough.
Figure 2, a vertical section of a portion thereof; and
Figures 3 and 4 are views of detached portions of said plough.
Similar letters indicate like parts in all the drawings. v r
The beam A of my improved plough is connected to the terminating shank D of the share, and to the righthand handle B of my improved plough, in such a manner that the ploughman, at his position behind the plough, can readily vary the position of the forward end of the plough-beam in a lateral or a vertical direction, and thereby cause the plough to form a wide or a narrow, a deep or ashallow furrow, as circumstances may require. The upper end of the sharesha-nk D is of a rounded shape, and the bolt is, which passes through the upper end of said shank, and through the beam A, has the inner surface of its head suflioiently bevelled to allow the position of the plough-beam upon the said share-shank to be so varied as to cause the plough to form a wide or narrow, a deep or a shallow furrow. The .after end of the beam A is connected to the right-hand handle B of the plough by means of the slotted metallic holder d, the bolt 0, the bolt e, and the set-screwf, as represented in the drawings. The holder [Z is of such a shape that the portion of it which has the slots 2' and j therein fits against the front side of the handle B, whilst the portion of said holder which has the slot 9 passes under the rear end of the beam A. The slotted holder [Z is secured to the plough-handle B by means of the ,bolt e and the set-screwf fhe bolt e passing through the sloti of the holder, and through the plough-handle to and through itsholding-nut n; and the set-screwfpassing through the slotj in said holder and into the solid wood of the plough-handle, as shown in fig. .Z. The holder (2 is secured to the afterend of the plough-beam by means of the bolt 0, the washer h, and the nut in, as shown in'the drawings. The longitudinal and lateral dimensions of the slot 9 iii the holder (Z are such as to allow suiiicient play therein of the bolt 0 to permit the forward end of the plough-bean1 to be adjusted to any desired vertical or lateral position, By the aid of the wrench l, the ploughman can readily loosen the nut m, and then adjust the forward end of the plough-beam to any desired lateral position, and secure the same in said position. And by slightly loosening the nuts m and n and the setscrewf, the ploughman can adjust the forward end of the plough-beam to any desired vertical position, and then firmly secure the same in said position by tightening the said nuts upon their respective bolts. The washer hlmust he of such a size as to give the head-of the bolt 0 a firm bearing against theunder surface of the holder (Z; but the said bolt-head may be made sufficiently broad to dispense with the use of said washer. The setscrewfmay also be dispensed with if desired, as the bolt e will be amply sufficient to secure the holder (Z in any desired position The graduated scale formed on the exposed face of the holder cl (fig. 4) enables the ploughman to readily and certainly adjust the plough-beam in such a. position as will cause the plough to form a furrow of the desired depth. 7
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Connecting the rear end of the beam A to the handle B of my improved plough by means of the slotted and angular-shaped holder d and the bolts 0 and c, as described, when the slots in said holder are of such a size and shape that by operating the bolt 0 the forward end of said plough-beam can be varied and secured in any desired lateral position, and by operating both of said bolts, and the forwardend of said plough-beam can be varied and secured in any desired vertical position, substantially as herein set forth.
The aforegoing specification of my improved plough signed and witnessed this 23d day of March, 1867.
CHARLES A. ELTON.
