Description
@ntrhtatra fetmt @Hirn PARRITT .LISDELL WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, Letters meenam. 66,672, daad Jazy 16,1867.
rnrnovsnsnr In' Urmenr nanas.
KNOW-AI|L MlilN BY'THESE PRESENTS: That I, PARRITT B'LArsnELL, ofl the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts,
have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in UprightDrills, of which the following is a full, clear,
anderact description,"refereneebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
Figure 'lV represents a 4front view of an upright drillivith my improvements applied thereto. Figur-e 2 represents a 'longitudinal central section on line A B, iig. 1; and' Y' Figure 3 represents a cross-section on lineA C '1),'same figure. l
v'.llo enable thoseiskilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail. l A In thedrawingsthe part marked A is the base of the frame B, to the top of which is east or fastened the armv C, upon which areplaced or fastened the bearings a a, in which the driving-shaft D runs, and upon the end of'which is gear b, which takes into gear c, which isvalso supported by arm C, as fully. indicated in tho drawings. Y. For4 the purposes of enabling the spindle to be moved longitudinally when in motion, gear c is providedivith a spline, whichlits4 into'a slot in the drill-spindle E, the lower end of which is provided 4with a,
tight collar, cl, whichrests upon the top of 'the stand F attached to the sliding-head G, which is moved np'and4 down" by the screw-spindle or shaft e which passes through a projection on, or a nut, 1, attached `to the back of the sliding-head G. The screw-spindle ehas a gear, f, which takes linto another gear, g, on 4the end of shaft h, which is :supported in a bearing, z',on the piece j attached to.: the adjustable frame H. A. hand-Wheel, c, is' placed' upon 'the end-oi` shaft h. A steel collarpieee, m, having a. shoulder, 1t, is iitted upon the spindle E and within the bearing-piece F, as fully shown inl the.drawings. The lower` end of spindle IE is turned down somewhat, and hasn screwthread cut. thereon to receive a nut, o, which, connectiontvith acollar, d, 4keeps the drilllspndle E'fronilongitudinal play, so that the drill p is kept fromdrop'ping as soon as its point breaks through t he article being bored, upon the table J, which is supported by arm K. attachedto frame B. In the nprightdrills in common use the points of the drills are often broken in this way, in con-sequence of back-lash 4in the spindle. By the use of nut o the lower bearingof the spindle can be kept so adjusted as to prevent all snclrbreakagos." y Theframe, H has a tongue, 2, which enters a slot or groove in the frame B, which retains the frame in a 'vertical position, while, by meansv of a bolt, I, it can be held in any desiredposition as respects the frame B. The back of head-piece G is made in dove-tail form "to fit a dove-tailgroove in the frame H. A packing-piece, 3, is inserted upon one side of the dove-tail part G, so that by means of screws 4 said packingpiece can be forced in to compensate for any wear of the parts.
It will 4be observed that as the drill-spindle is -fed down to the work the lower bearing moves down with it, and consequently the Vlower end of the spindles k'ept steady, which renders the action of the drill more perfectithun if the end of the spindle was not thus supported.
I' have shown my improvements :applied to arl\ upright drill; but they may be applied vto a drill in an inclined or horizontal positiornfl The sliding head-piece Gr may have a rack attached to it so as to be moved up 4and down' by a pinion, theshait of which rests and turns in bearings attached to frame 1I.
Having described my improvements inrdrills, what I claim therein as new and of myinvention, and'desire to secureby Letters PatentLis-m-v Y I. '.Th'e combination, with the sliding head-piece G- andbearing F, of the upright spindle E, provided with vthe collarsf 'm n ut o, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the adjustable' frame H and spindle E, of the sliding head-piece G, screw-shaft e,
'collars m d, andnnt o, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3; The combination of the sliding head-piece and bearing F with the adjustable frame H and spindle E,
Varranged as and for thepnrposes'set forth.
` PARRITT BLAISDELL.
