Ilaria@ ewl HEINRICH MEIER AND FLORIAN OBACHT, OF FRANKFORT-ON-THE-MAIN, GERMANY.
PRINTING CONTINUOUS ORNAMENTS ON CEILINGS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 665,836, dated January 1, 1901.
Application filed August 24,1899. Serial No. 728,367. (No model.)
To all when@ t may concern:
Be it known that we, HEINRICH MEIER and FLORIAN OBAOHT, residing in the city of Frankfort, in the German Empire, (and whose post-otiice addresses are respectively No. 36 Sternstrasse and No. 7 Mittelweg, Frankforton-the-Main, Germany,`) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for the Ornamentation of Ceilings and other Surfaces, of which the following is a specification.
In the drawingsaccompanying this application, Figure lis an elevation, partly in section, Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views, showing our invention.
The reference-letter A indicates a handle having a cross-head B, which carries two parallel side pieces C, both of which are L-shaped and secured to the cross-head B in a slot b by means of set-screws b2, which pass through slots b, thus making the side pieces adjustable toward and from each other. In openings c2 in the side pieces are placed the journals of' a central shaft H, carrying a cylinder G, consisting of a solid body g, covered with a sleeve of rubber g or other suitable material and having an ornamental pattern formed by points or lines g2 in relief. The side pieces C are also provided with openings c, so formed that the ends of a shaft E may be adjusted therein toward and from the cylinder G. Said shaft E carries a hollow cylinder D, which is provided with numerous perforations CZ and inclosed by a cover d, of felt or other porous material, through which coloring material can pass. An opening d2 is provided through which the cylinder D can be iilled with any desired coloringmatter. The cylinder is then adjusted toward the cylinder G until the porous covering d is pressed against the reliefs of cylinder G with sufficient force to cause the two to revolve in unison. The cylinder G is then rolled over the surface to be orn amented with a suitable pressure, and the color, which is supplied to its ornamental design in relief, is transferred to the surface over which the cylinder rolls.
By adjusting the L-shaped side pieces C in the slot b ot' the cross-head B cylinders of different lengths can be usedv and of varied ornamentation, two of such cylinders being shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
In Fig. 3 the ornamention points or lines g3 are similar to those lettered g2, shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, but placed lengthwise of the cylinder G, and in Fig. 4 the points g4 are arranged to form a different pattern, as shown.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure byLett-ers Patent of the United States, is-
1. An apparatus for the continuous ornamentation of ceilings and other surfaces consisting of a handle havinga cross-head provided with a longitudinal slot, L-shaped side pieces adjustable in said slot, a cylinder journaled in said side pieces and having a yielding cover with an ornamental pattern in relief, and a hollow cylinder having numerous openings in its wall and covered with a porous material, said cylinder being adjustable toward and from the other, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a handle having a cross-head, of L-shaped side pieces adjustable in a slot in said cross-head, set-screws passing through slots in the cross-head to lock the side pieces, a cylinder having a yielding cover provided with an ornamental design in relief, a hollow color-cylinder having numerous openings covered by a porous material, said cylinder having the ends of its shaft movable in slots in the side pieces toward and from the other cylinder, and means for locking the color-cylinder at point of adjustment, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
HEINRICH MEIER. FLORIAN OBACHT.
