Description
EBENEZER SPERRY, OF MIAMI VILLAGE,IKANSAS.
TOY GUN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 66,531, idated July 9,1867.
To all whomjt may concern:
Be it known that I, EBENEZER SPERRY, of
Miami Village, in the county of Miami and State of Kansas, have invented a new Toy i and Harpoon Gun; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a top plan of the improved gun. 4 Fig. 2 is a side elevation of it. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
This invention consists in the employment of a gun-barrel in connection with a plunger and elastic springs, the springs being ar ranged so as to dr'aw the said plunger forward with great violence as soon as the trigger releases the plunger at the breech of the piece. 'There are arms attached to the plun-' ger, and projecting outside of the barrel, which is slotted nearly its entire length for their passage, the said arms being used for the attachment of the aforesaid elastic springs to the plunger.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my improved gun, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. j
A is the gun-barrel, and B is the wooden stock. C is the plungerV or follower, to which the springs D are applied, to draw it -for" Ward.
rEhe plunger is a cylindrical piece of metal, having arms c c, which project through slots a, win the sides of the gun-barrel, the said slots being long enough to accommodate the Whole longitudinal motion required of the plunger. The cylindrical cavity c1 of the plunger should be of the same caliber as the bore al of the muzzle of the gun-barrel, which is contracted at the square shoulder a2 to the proper size, the said square shoulder vserving to stop the forward motion of the plunger.
The springs D are simply india-rubber bands, or some similar elastic material, hooked over the arms c3, projecting fromthe sides of the gun-barrel, near its muzzle, and over the arms c c, projecting from the sides of the plunger.
A strap, c2, either of metal or of some pliable material, as leather, attached to the plunger C, is hooked over the detent E, which forms the principal part of the lock of thepiece..
This detent is an L-shaped piece of metal, as clearly shown in Figr, is pivoted to the stock ate, and has a small arm, el, to which the strap c2 is hooked when the piece is prepared for a discharge.
The lower end of the detent E is shaped as i shown by c2 in Fig. 3.
The guard F is permanently fixed at f and f1, but acts as a spring at the point f2.
When, now, the gun is readyfor discharge,
and the plate f2 on c2 is to press E into itsA original position,.in which c2 may again be passed over E, as originally done. A toy missile or a harpoou placed within the barrel previous to the discharge of the plunger will be thrown out with great force by its moY mentum.
This gun may be found very useful in throwing the harpoon; but in that case a slot (not shown) would have to be cut for the harpoon-line in the bottom of the gun-barrel- The guard G is simply used to hold the back end of the barrel in place.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- .lhe combination of the detent E with the guard-spring F and check-piece f2, and the trigger E', substantially as set forth.
EBENEZER SPERRY.
