UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY C. EGLISI-I, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
WATER-H EATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,197, dated January 1, 1901'.
Application filed Apri124, 1900. l Serial No. 14,152. (No model.) i
T0 cir/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. ENGLISH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilmington, Delaware, have invented certain Improvements in Water-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct a Water-heater as to provide a large area of heating-surface, to insure the effective action of the products of combustion and free circulation for the water, and to render unnecessary any elaborate fitting of the parts of the heater. This objectI attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a water-heater constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view on the line a a, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan View on the line b b, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a top or plan view, partly broken away to show the interior construction.
The heater has a liaring base 1, containing the ash-pit andv provided with suitable sup-` ports for the grate 2, which may be of any desired construction, said lower section l having at one side the usual dampered ash-pitthe heater comprises a lower hollow casing 4 constituting a cold-water chamber, a series of hollow vertical ribs 5, communicating Withsaid'chamber and projecting inwardly beyond the same, and an upper hollow casing 6, conl. stituting a hot-water chamber and likewise communicating with the hollow ribs 5, each water-section of the heater being preferably cast in one piece, so that there are in said heater no joints which require to be packed,
and consequently no risk of leakage. The portions t of the water-sections of the heater surround the fire-pot and the lower portion 7 of the combustion-chamber, and each of said water-sections receives its supply of cold water from an appropriate pipe 8, other pipes 9 serving to convey the hot water away from the upper portions 6 of each section. The
hollow ribs have tapered sides, so as to per- In the inner casing ofthe upper portion 6 ofk each water-section of the heater, between the ribs 5, are formed slots or openings 10,th rough which the products of combustion can escape into a flue contained within a casing 11, mounted upon an external rib on the watersections of the heater and connected at one sideto the smoke-pipe 12, this flue-casing being preferably formed in two right-angled sections with flanges, bolted together lat the `meeting-points, as shown in Fig. 2.
access to any portion of the i'lue is permitted for cleansing or other purposes. The valves or dampers also serve as a means of checking the draftwhen desired.
The upper or hot-water portions 6 of the water-sections of the heater surround a central opening-14E, and upon said portions 6 is mounted a neck or collar 15, with detachable lid 16, said opening 14 and neck 15 constituting the fuel-feed opening ofthe heater, no portion of the side heating-surface of either of the water-sections of the heater being sacrificed for the formation of a fuel-feed opening therein.
The cheapness of construction of a waterheater made in accordance with my invention will be apparent from the fact that it is composed of simple castings, which can be bolted or otherwise fitted together without the necessity of forming any expensive or troublesome Water-tight joints, and the economical operation of the heater is assured by reason of the large heating-surface presented and the facilities afforded for direct access yof the products of combustion to all parts of said heating-surface.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A water-heater having a water structure comprising a lower hollow casing surrounding the fire-pot and containing the coldwater chamber, an upper hot-water casing, and hollow vertical ribs connecting said Vchambers and extending inwardly beyond the cold-water chamber, the extent of projection of the ribs being graduated, the central rib of each set having the greatest proj ection and the outermost ribs of the set having the least projection, substantially as specified.
2. A water-heater having a water structure comprising a lower hollow casing surrounding the tirepot and containing the coldwater chamber, an upper hollow casing containing the hot-water chamber and hollow vertical ribs connecting the two chambers, and a line structure surrounding and supported upon the Water structure at the top of the same and communicating with the combustion-chamber through openings form ed in the casing of said Water structure between the projecting hollow ribs of the same, substantially as specified.
3. A water-heater comprising a rectangular water structure composed of a series of iatsided sections each comprising a lower hollow casing containing the cold-water chamber, an upper hollow casing containing the hot-water chamber, and a series of hollow vertical ribs connecting the two chambers, each section being an integral, j ointless structure, substantially as specified.
4L. A water-heater comprising a rectangular water structure with lower hollow casing containing the cold-water chamber, an upper hollow casing containing the hot-water chamber, and hollow Vertical ribs connecting the two chambers, in combination with a flue structure surrounding and supported upon the upper portion of the water structure and communicating with the combustion-chamber through openings formed in said structure, said i'lue structure being rectangular and having movable Valves or dampers at the opposite corners whereby access to the interior of the flue structure is permitted or the draft checked, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence ol two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY C. ENGLISH.
