To all whom it 7IMI/I/ concern:

Be it known that I, ALVY NEWTON GOFF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rocky Ford, in the county of Otero and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Calf or Oolt Veaner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

One purpose of the invention is to provide a weaning device for calves and colts which will be light, simple, economic, and easily applied and which will effectually prevent the wearer from nursing, but will permit the wearer to graze, feed, and drink without interference.

A further purpose of the invention is to so construct the device that when an attempt is made to nurse the device will be brought into annoying contact with the mother and will cause the latter to quickly leave the young animal.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device applied to the head of a calf, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device.

Two parallel side bars A are employed. These side bars may be made of any desired material; but usually the side bars are constructed of' strands of wire of suitable gage twisted together, and the side bars at their rear ends are connected by a throat-latch 10, which throat-latch is preferably made of the same material as the material of the side bars. At the rear end of the side bars A a headstrap 11 is located, provided with a suitable buckle 12, so that the said head-strap may be adjusted and may be quickly applied to the head of the animal.

Near the front portion of the side bars A a nose-strap 13 connects the said side bars, and just below the nose-strap a chin-strap 14: extends from one side bar to the other. This latter strap is preferably provided with a buckle 15, so that it may be adjusted as required.

At the forward portion of each side bar A, in front of the nose and chin straps, arms 16 are upwardly and'forwardly projected, connecting with a cross-bar 17, and each arm 16 is provided with a forward extension 18, which tends upward, the extremities of which extensions are sharpened to any desired degree. Upwardly-tending extensions 19 are also carried from the forward ends of the side bars A at a point below the connection of the said arms 16 with the side bars, and these lower extensions 19 are located beneath the upper extensions 18 and are preferably of greater length than the upper extensions 18. The lower extensions 19 are also preferably sharp ened at their forward extremities.

The extensions 18-and 19 pass through a vertical guard or shield 20, which guard or shield is secured to the extensions 18 and 19 of the side bars A by soldering or other means. The guard or shield 20 may be made of any suitable material. Usually, however, the guard is made of wire-gauze ora perforated material,the edges whereofare suit-abl y strength ened by a wire frame, for example.

When the device is applied to the head of an animal, as shown in Fig. l, and said animal approaches its mother for the purpose of nursing or comes too close to its mother, the pointed ends of the extensions 18 and 19 will be brought into unpleasant contact with the mother, and the result will follow that the mother will quickly move away. Furthermore, even should the points of the extensions 1S and 19 fail to touch the mother the calf or colt cannot take the teat because of the guard or shield 20; but the young animal may freely graze, drink, or take food, as there is ample space between the nose of the animal and the guard 20 to permit the mouth to be brought to the ground or into a trough or feeding pan or pail. While grazing the lower extensions 19 from the side bars rest upon the ground.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.
