Joint CHAPMAN, or MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY;
sAU oE-Boi rLs'.
srn'orricnrron forming part of. Letters Pa ent No. 650,749, dated. Mag 29, 1900; Application filed January 22, 1900- Serial N01 2,350. (No model J T0 (ZZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN M. CHAPMAN,a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Morristown in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Sauce-Bottle, of which the following is a fiill, clear, and exact description. r
One purpose of the invention is to so con struct a bottle adapted to contain a sauce or other liquid condiment that the stopper em:
ployed will admit of the contents, usually tending to lodge at the mouth of the bottle, draining or otherwise finding its Way to'the body while the cover or stopper is in place on the bottle, thus avoiding the uncleanly and unsightly accumulation of material often seen at the mouth of such bottles.
A further purpose of the invention is to so construct the stopper or cover that while permitting the action above mentioned the stopper or cover will perfectly cap or close the mouth of the bottle or receptacle and after being placed in position will so remain against lateral displacement.
It is also a purpose of the invention to so construct a stopper or cover of the character mentioned that a tubular chamber or dome is provided adapted to receive the handle of a spoon located within the bottle when the cover or stopper is in place on the body of the receptacle.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indi cate corresponding parts in both the figures.
ployed, and both of these parts, although they may be made of any desired material, are ,usually constructed of glass. The cover or stopper 0 is provided with a dome 11 and ahoriz ontal flange 12 at the base of the dome, which flange 12 is annular and is adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the mouth of the vessel "or receptacle A. The stopper or cover 0 is f urtlier provided with a down} wardly-projected annular flange projection 13, which is adapted to enter and remain in the month of the vessel or receptacleAwhen the stopper or cover is in. place. The flange portion 13, however, is of less diameter than the diameter of the mouth of the vessel for which the stopper or cover is intended, so
that a space 14 is obtained between the flange 13 and the contiguous surface of the neck B of the vessel .or receptacle A, as shown in the drawings; This space enables the mouth of the bottle to drain itself clear, or, in other words, any liquid material that might be liable to clog the mouth of the vessel or receptacle A will drain down into the body of the receptacle,-thus keeping the mouth of the recep' tacle A free from any adhering material or material that might adhere thereto to any detrimental extent, while the flange 12 of the cover, resting upon the upper surface of the receptacle or vessel A, serves to exclude the air and render the mouth of the vessel closed for all practical purposes.
The dome 11 of the cover is designed to accommodate the handle of a spoon,which spoon is free from the cover and may therefore be permitted to remain in the body of the receptacle While the cover or stopper is in place without interfering in the slightest with the functions of the stopper.
In the drawings I have shown the mouthsection of the neck B as interiorly curved in an outward and upward direction, and such curvature in many instances serves to facilitate the clearance of the mouth of the receptacle A from material likely to adhere thereto under other conditions of construction, and I have also shown the flange 12 as provided with an underannular and marginal rib 15, which rib when the stopper or cover is placed in position upon the receptacle A tends to prevent the said cover or stopper 0 from having lateral displacement and maintains the inner flange 13 Ma practically central or defined position relative to the inner wall of the neck B.
too
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A sauce -b0ttle, consisting of a body the neck whereof is provided with an annular flange at the mouth, and a cover or stopper for the body, consisting of a domebody, a horizontal flange at the base of the dome, adapted to extend over and engage with the upper surface of the mouth of the body, a projection from the said flange adapted to prevent lateral movement of the stopper or cover on the body of the receptacle, and an inner downwardly-extending annular flange, the interior whereof constitutes a continua- JOHN M. CHAPMAN.
