SOLDIERING-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 650,643, dated May 29, 1900.

- declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters and numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to soldering-irons; and it has reference particularly to that class of such implements in which is comprised in.
the device a receptacle for the solder, which latter may be maintained in a molten condition by heating the receptacle, and, in combination with said receptacle, means for feeding or discharging the solder therefrom.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved tool of the kind above particularly designated and which shall be simple and durable in construction and thoroughly efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the improved soldering-iron and in the combination and arrangement of its various parts, substantially as will be hereinafter pointed out, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in the two figures of which corresp0nding1et ters and numerals of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of myimproved soldering-iron, a portion thereof being shown in section; and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of myimproved soldering=iron, the handle and part of a certain lever being broken away.
In said drawings, a designates a metallic receptacle or chamber which is substantially cylindrical in form and to which is secured, preferably by a tongue-and-groove joint 5, a tip or head 0, formed, as usual, of copper and adapted for use in manipulating the solder after it has been applied. Into the bottom wall d of the receptacle or chamber aprojects the lower end of a tube e, which is screwthreaded, as at f, and engages corresponding screw-threading in said wall (Z. Into the top of the chamber a isscrewed a cap it, said cap thus being removable. Into said cap is set a screw Z, which constitutes a plug. This plug may be removed, so that the threaded opening into which it fits can be adapted not only for filling the chamber with solder, which can be most conveniently introduced in molten form, but it is also adapted as an air-vent should it be necessary to provide for the escape of the air at any time, as when in melting the solder in the chamber.
It should be remarked that the upper end of the tube e fits into a recess m in the under side of the cap 70.

The cap is provided onits outer face with an integral hexagonal projection 19, and through this projection and the cap extends the upper end of the valve-stem n. The valve-stem before it projects through the cap has a threaded enlargement g, which is screwed into the upper end of the tube e. Thus by turning the valve-stem longitudinal adjustment thereof can be effected, and in this waythe communication between the interior of the chamber a and the channel It can be controlled. The hexagonal enlargement p of course isprovided, so that with the use of awrench the cap can be readily fixed in place or removed. The upper end of the valve-stem is provided with a crank r, whose free end carries a screw 25. Said screw serves as a pivotal connection between the connecting-rod u and said crank.
o is a spindle or shank which at one end is screwed into an enlargement w, projecting laterally from the upper end of the chamber a, and which at the other end carries a hanward the handle end of the implement by means of a spiral spring 3, which is coiled about it and is disposed between the bracket 2 and the collar 4, secured on said connecting-rod. The action of the spring of course tends to normally close the valve which controls the discharge from the chamber a.
Itjis believed that the operation of my improved'soldering-iron will be fully understood without particular description thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by I Letters Patent, is-
I. In a soldering implement, the combination of a hollow member having a suitable discharge outlet or outlets, a valve controlling said outlet or outlets and havinga screwthreaded engagement with a rigid portion of said member, a handle projecting from said member, and means, carried by said handle,
for turning said valve, substantially as described.
2. In a soldering implement, the combina tion of a chamber or receptacle, a handle projecting therefrom, a tube inclosed in said re ceptacle, said tube having openings affording exterior communication from said chamber, a valve-stem screwed into said tube and having a plug adapted to control said openings, and means,carried by said handle, for turning said valve-stem, substantially as described.
3. In a soldering implement, the combination of a chamber or receptacle, ahandle projecting therefrom, a tube inclosed in said receptacle, said tube having openings affording exterior communication from said chamber, a valve-stem screwed into said tube and having a plug adapted to control said openings, a cap for said receptacle, said valve-stem pro jecting through the same, a crank carried by the exterior end of said valve-stem, a lever fulcrumed on the handle, and a spring-actuated rod connecting the lever and the crank,
