END-GATE.
SPEGIFIGA TIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,610, dated May 29, 1900.
Application filed March 17, 1900- Serial No. 91067. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HENRY Pow- ERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVindfall, in the county of Tipton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in end-gates for wagons; and one object of my invention is the provision of an end-gate which can be opened and closed with ease, which will hold securely and reliably against accidental release, and which will permit the loading of the wagon-body to its full capacity and will assist in the loading of the wagon.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an end-gate for wagons which will be of simple, inexpensive, and durable construlction and thoroughly efficient and practica To attain the desired objects and such others as pertain to an invention of this character, my invention consists of an end-gate embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my end-gate shown as closed. Fig. 2 represents a similar view with the end-gate opened. Fig. 3 represents a top plan view. Fig. 4 represents an end view.
In the drawings, A designates a portion of the body of a wagon, which is provided with the cross-piece B, which is secured to and projects beyond the sides of the body.
The end-gate is arranged in the end of the wagon-body, as is well known, and consists of the closingate proper, C, to which is secured the frame D, and to the frame at each end are attached the vertical strips or rails E,
the whole forming a gate structure, which fits snugly in the end of the wagon, as shown, and the strips or rails are formed at their lower ends with the angular recesses or shoulders F, which fit upon the cross-strip of the body, and the shoulders terminate in the curved portion G, which allows the gate to swing down upon the strip after the manner of a hinge and, with the shoulders, causes a snug fit of the gate when open or closed. The side rails or strips of the end-gate are further provided with keepers H, which are secured by the spring-catches J, the purpose of which is to lock the end-gate against accidental release, but to allow the gate to be opened when necessary by simply releasing the catches, as is evident.
To each side of the end-gate is connected the outerends of the links or rods K, the inner ends thereof being hinged to the links, rods, or levers L, said levers L being pivoted at their inner ends to the pin M, which pin is mounted in the frames N.
In operation the parts are in their normal position, as shown in Fig. 1, and when it is desired to open the gate the spring-catches are released and the gate can be opened, the levers being extended, as shown in Fig. 2, and supporting the end-gate, so that the wagon can be filled to its full capacity. To close the gate, it is simply necessary to lift the same and it will swing back into the end of the body and the spring-catches will hold it in closed position.
It is evident from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, that I provide an end-gate which will permit the wagon to be filled to its full capacity, which will allow an easy filling of the wagon, which is easy to open and close, and which is strong, durable, inexpensive, and practical.
I claim- The combination of a wagon-body provided with a cross-piece at its rear, of an end-gate having its end rails formed with shoulders fitting upon the cross-piece of the body after the manner of a hinge, pivoted levershaving one of their ends connected to the end-gate, metal frames secured upon the sides of the wagon-body forming pivots for the other ends of the levers, and springcatches for securing the end-gate when closed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HENRY POWERS.
Witnesses:
