Be it known that I, DAVID FRANK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, (Brooklym) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in bedsteads, and pertains more particularly to novel fastening means to be employed at the corners of the bedstead for connecting together the posts and side rails.
The object of my invention is to produce fastening devices which are entirely durable and eftcient and will prevent any looseness between the connected parts of the bedstead, the side rails and corner-posts being by my invention capable of rm and rigidconnection with one another and at the same time adapted to be separated in the proper manner without inconvenience.
My invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims, and the nature and objects of the invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of fastening devices embodying my invention, said figure also showing a portion of one bed-post and, by dotted lines, a portion of one side rail and of one of the transverse beams connected with the usual spring-frame. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of same on the dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a top view of same. Fig. 4 isa View corresponding with Fig. 1, but illustrating a slightly-modified outline of one of the fastening-plates, the form of plate presented in Fig. 4 being employed when it is not desired to use a spring-f rame having thel special transverse beam indicated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.' Fig. 5 is a vertical section of same on the dotted line 5 5 of Fig. 4; and Fig. G is a detached side elevation of a portion of the fastening devices, taken from the outer side of same.
In the drawings, 10 denotes the usual bedpost, and 11 one of the usual side rails. To
the bed-post 10 is applied a fastening-plate 12, and to the side rail 11 is secured a fasteningplate 13, said fastening-plates l2 and 13 being oi' special construction and embracing the novel features of the inventionsought to be protected. The plate 12 will preferably be cast upon the post 10 and may be in one integral piece, or the section 14 of said plate may be wrought metal and secured to the other portion of said plate by being at one edge cast into the same by means' of a chillin a well# known manner. In the present description I shall consider the plate 12, including its section 14, as being in one integral cast piece and cast upon the bed-post 10. The plate 12 in its present form possesses the downwardly and outwardly inclined wedge-surL faces 15 15, which also incline laterally inward toward the post 10, said wedge-surfaces 15 terminating at their inner `edges against the vertical section 14, which preferably is centrally disposed with respect to said plate 12 and is formed with the two hooks 1G 16 to lreceive the laterally-projecting rigid pins 17, carried by the fastening-plate 13. The wedge surfaces 15 possess the double inclination in; dicated above-that is, they incline downwardly and outwardly from the post 10 and also inwardly and laterally toward one another and toward the post 10-and I prefer to form both ofthe surfaces 15 upon the plate 12,
although but one of the said surfaces can be used at one time, since thereby the post 10,
carrying the plate 12, is adapted to receiveeither the right-hand fastening-platel or the left-hand fastening-plate 13, the plate 12 being thus adapted for use at'either side of the bed.
The fastening-plate 13 is simply a substan-V tially-vertical plate to which the side rail 11 may be bolted and which is provided with the laterally-projecting pins 17 and also `with the wedge -surface 1S, the latter inclining downwardly and outwardly from the post 10 and also laterally inward toward said post, so as to conform to the wedge-surfaces 15 of the plate 12, with which it engages. The wedge-surface 1S of the plate 13 need not be continuous from its upper to its lower edge,
but should engage one wedge-surface 15 of the plate 12 at its upper and lower portions in order to attain the best results, and hence, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, the
middle portions of the wedge-surface 18 mayV be cut away or omitted and only a portion of the upper and lower ends of said surface be vpermitted to contact with the wedge-surface IOO 45 plates 13 and side rails 11.

The fastening-plate 13 is connected with the fastening-plate 12 by simply guiding the pins 17 into engagement with the hook's 16 and by moving the wedge-surface 18 of said plate13downward into engagement with the wedge-surface of said plate 12, the said wedge-surfaces closely bindingthe said plates 12 and 13 together and causing ,the pins' 17 of the hooks 16.
and thereby thefastening of the siderail to the-end post is rendered rigid and secure'and any lateral strain on'the bed is effectually resisted by the firm-surfaces 15 .and relieved fromthe more delicate members represen-ted by the pinsY 17 and hooks 16. It will be ohserved that -the plate 12, having the wedgesurfaces 15 is of the most durable character andcapable of withstanding any usual strains whichcould properly come upon or against thebed, andi hence the bed possessing the fastening devices of the character hereinbe'- fore vdescribed is entirely firm and durable and-not at all likely to become impaired with any ordinary handling or use. `Inthe form of the fastening devices shown in Figs. 1, 2,and-3 the angle-iron side rail 11 will be vbolted to the fastening-plate 13, and the transverse beam 19, connected withthe spring-frame, (not showin) will be secured by ascrew 20.,tosaid plate 13 and also bya-bolt,` 'Zlto said angle-iron side rail 11.

the essential consideration being that the plate 13 be interlocked with the section 14 of the plate 12 and that said-plates have wedgesurfaces for engagement with one another,
the wedge-surface on the plate 13 being at its outer edge and the wedge-surface on the plate 12 being at the base of the section 14. -In the prefer-red'` form of the invention the said wedge-'surfaces will incline laterally and in wardly, as shown, or will be in-some form'rendering them capable of lateral engagementA with one another, so as to resist lateral strains and prevent the fastening-plate 13 from moving laterally froxnthe plate 12, and this result may be accomplished whether' the meet- `in g'si'lrfaces 1 5 `1S are fiat, as shown, or correspondingly cu rved or given some other suitable outline.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A bedstead fastening comprising the plate12 ysecured to the bed-post 10 and hav- '16, onebelow theother, vand said plate 12 hav- Aing-at the base of said section 14 the downwardly and outwardly and also laterally inclined wedge-surface 15, combined with the' fastening-plate 13 having the laterally-projecting pins 17, 17, to engage said hooks,and also having at its edge the wedge-surface 18 to engage said wedge-surface 15,; substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A bedstead-fastening comprising ythe two plates 12, 13, for connection with the post and side rail respectively and provided with means for engaging the side of 'one plate with the side of the other plate, one of said ,plates being formed, independent of the saidengaging or side locking means and in addition thereto, with the downwardly and outwardly inclined wedge and laterally-inclined lockingsurface 15, and the other of said plates having the conforming surface 18 to be received by the said surface 15, whereby said plates in addition to being interlocked one `upon the other, are, by the said inclined surfaces 15, 18, firml y bound togetherand prevented from lateraldisplacement one from the other; 'substantially as and for the rpur-poses set forth.
A bedstead.- fastening comprising the plates` 12 and 13, the former having the khooklike section 14, and the plate 1'3 having laterally-projecting means to engage said section. 14, and said plate 12 having at the base of said section 14 the downwardly and outwardly and laterally inclined wedge-surface 15, and said plate 13 having the corresponding surface 18 to engage said surface 15; substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. A bedstead ` fasteningcomprisingthe plates 12 and 13, the former having-the hooklike section 14 and at the basethe'reof and at the opposite sides of said section 14,the downwardly and outwardly and also laterally inclined wedge- surfaces 15,15, and the plate 13 having laterally-projecting means lto engage said section 14 and also having at its edge a wedge-surface 18 to engage one of the said side wedge-surfaces 15; substantial-1y as and for the purposes set forth. f l
