ToBAcoo-cART.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 650,069, dated May 22, 1900. Application filed 0ot0be1i1'7 1899- Serin1No.' 73B,902. (Nomotleh) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MEDACUS F. PARHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rocky Mount, in the county of Edgecombe and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacc0-Oarts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to means for gathering stalks of tobacco in the field and transporting them without breaking or bruising to the storehouse or barn where they are to be cured.
The object of my said invention is to provide a two-wheeled cart or vehicle, having a canvas cover to protect the tobacco from the sun while being transported, to be drawn by a horse passing between the rows of tobaccoplants, or the same may be drawn by hand.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cart or vehicle. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is an inverted View of the platform on which the plants or stalks of tobacco are transported and of the canvas covering to the same.
A A are the standards which carry the Wheels 13 B, which are supported upon the axles b 1), arranged to pass through bifurcated braces or arms a 0, extending from the shafts D D, which are secured to a cross-piece E, attached to and connecting the standards A A. At the top of the standards A A is arranged a platform F, composed of three bars G G G, having a series of rods 9 to support the tobacco-plants when gathered. Above the plat form is a canvas cover or roof II, which slopes from the center upon each side and extends some distance on either side beyond the wheels as a protection for the workman, as well asto exclude the sun from the gathered tobacco. Metal legs a a are attached to the foot of each standard and aid in supporting the axles b Z2. A pair of U-shaped holders I I to carry a supply of rods on which the tobacco plants or stalks are strung when gathered are secured to the shafts D D and the cross piece E. Through openings in the standards A A are carried temporarily and within easy reach of the workman rods K from the supply secured in the U-shaped holders I I. At the front of the platform F it is supported on either side by a brace L, secured to the shafts.
The operation is as follows: As the vehicle is drawn across the field it covers two rows of tobacco, and two or three other rows on each side of the wheels can be harvested. As the vehicle passes along the rows the tobacco is primed and strung on the sticks, which are placed on the platform under the canvas cover. The vehicle can then be drawn to the end of the rows where the sticks strung with the tobacco may be loaded into a wagon and transported to the barn or drying-house and hung up to cure, or the vehicle itself with the load may be driven directly to' the barn or storehouse Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A vehicle comprising a pair of shafts D, D, connected by a cross-piece E, standards A, A, bifurcated braces or arms 0, 0, wheels B, B, axles b, b, in combination with the platform F and the supported canvas cover H, arranged to extend laterally beyond the tread of the wheels whereby the gathered tobacco and the workman are protected from the sun, substantially as described.
2. A vehicle comprising a pair of shafts D D connected bya cross-piece E, standards A A provided with metal legs a, a, bifurcated braces or arms 0 C, wheels B B, axles b 19, platform F and canvas cover H in combination with holders I I arranged to receive the storing-rods, openings in the standards to temporarily receive the storing-rods, all constructed, arranged and operating substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
