GEORGE E. PANOOAST, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN LITHOGRAPHIO COMPANY, OF NEW YORK.
PRINTING-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,351, dated. October 9, 1900.
Application filed March 6, 1900. Serial No. 7,447. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. PANCOAST, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of the city of New York, (Brooklyn,) county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanism adapted and designed for use in making printingsurfaces, and which is of special utility in making curved and cylindrical printing-surfaces. Prior to my invention many difiiculties have been encountered in the litho- I 5 graphic art in making curved or cylindrical printing-surfaces, especially when such surfaces are intended to print in proper register. The only practical solution of the problem yet proposed has been by employing 2o rolling contact between a printing-form and a basic surface, whereby the transfers of the latter are imposed upon the former. present invention accomplishes the desired result without employing rolling contact and z 5 by mechanism which combines efficiency with economy and simplicity. The invention is addressed to that department of the'art usually termed transferring. It will of course be understood that although the printingform is a planesnrfa'ce to start with it may in its development result in a planographic; relief, or intaglio printing-surface.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification and illustrating one 5 embodiment of the invention and one modification thereof, Figure 1 is a front elevation,
partly in section, of a machine embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation looking toward the left of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the left-end of a clamping device. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the right end of the clamping device. Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 isafragmental front elevation of a modification, and Fig. 8 is a sectional elevation on the line 8 8 of Fig. 7.
Referring now to the specific construction of the devices in the drawings, 1 is a cylin- 5o drical form-support having trunnions 2and 3 and removably mounted in bearings in the The main frame of the machine and held against rotation by the key 4. The form-support has a shoulder 5 at one end and adjustable clamps 6 at the other end.
7 is a removable and replaceable printingform adapted to have a design imposed thereon and to be developed into a printing-surface of the character desiredplanographic, relief, or intaglio. It is preferably a hollow 6o cylindrical shell, as shown, and when seated in place on its support fits accurately against the shoulder 5, against which it is held by the clamps 6.
8 is a revolving pressure device consisting 6 i of the cross-piece 9 and the arm 10 and the arms 11 12, these arms being pivot-ally hung from the shaft 2.
Forthe purpose of removingand replacing the printing-surface one side of the main frame has a hinged portion 13, which is adapted to be turned down out of the Way.
This hinged portion 13 is provided with a locking-bar 14 and is designed to carry the box 15, in which rests the trunnion 3.
16 is a nut which screws on the end of the trunnion 3 on the outside of the hinged piece 13, so as to hold this piece 13 firmly in upright position when the printing-form is in place on its support. The locking-bar 14 extends across the top of the box 15 and is secured in place by the nutl7, so as to hold the box 15 firmlyin place. The arms 11 and 12 are pivoted to the cross-piece 9 by the bolt 18, so as to be capable of being disengaged from the trunnion Pivoted on the arm 12 is a locking-bar 19, which is adapted to enter a recess in the upper end of the arm 11 and by means of the nut 20 lock the arms 11 and 12 together in engagement with the trunnion 3. This ar- 'rangement of the arms 11 and 12 is designed merely as a convenient arrangement to facilitate the removal of a printing-form. When the printing-form is to be removed, the bar 19 is unlocked and thrown back, and the arms 5 11 and 12 are separated and disengaged from the trunnion 3. The bar 14 is then unlocked and thrown back, the nut 16 is removed, and
the hinged piece 13 turned down into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. An ICO arm is generally brought into alinement with and locked with the trunnion 3, and upon it the printing-form 7 may be slid from the formsupport. This arm, which is not shown, may operate to support the trunnion 3; but generally the form-support 1 will be sufficiently supported by the trunnion 2 at the opposite side of the frame. In removing a printingform the clamps 6 are loosened and turned inward, so that the printing-form may be slipped from its support. The collar 5 insures the seating of the printing-form always in the same exact predetermined longitudinal position. verse or circumferential position of the printing-form on its support is insured by the rib 21 on the inner side of the printing-form,
which enters a corresponding groove in the form-support. Other means, of course, may be employed for this purpose.
The revolving pressure device 8 is provided with a yielding scraper 22, which rests in a slot in the cross-piece 9 and is pressed radially toward the periphery of the printingform by springs 23. These springs have screws 23 by which to adjust their tension. The basic surface 24, which is non-expansible and non-contractible, has a design or a plurality of designs atfixed thereto, so as to be non-expansible and non-contractible. The basic surface is flexible and generally consists of a flexible sheet of metal, preferably a thin sheet of steel, having one or two layers of paper affixed thereto and upon which is stuck up in proper position the various transfersheets whose designs are to be imposed upon the printing-form. One end of the basic surface is secured in a suitable holding device, which may be a' clamping device, such as shown. This clamping device consists of a bar 25, whose ends are bolted to the inner sides of the main frame, and a removable bar 26, adapted to be clamped against the bar 25 by the screws 27. The clamp end of the basic surface is turned down, as shown in Fig. 6, and is provided with a row of perforations 28, which fit accurately over the pins 29, secured on the bar25. The pins 29 and perforations 28 insure the exact longitudinal and transverse position of the basic surface. Other means, of course, may be employed for this purpose.
In the modifications shown in Figs. 7 and 8 the same construction is shown, with the exception of the revolving pressure device. In Figs. '7 and 8 the pressure device 30 is revolubly connected with the trunnions 2 and 3 by the arms 10, 11, and 12, but is provided with a roller 31 instead of a scraper 22, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and l. The roller 31 is supported in boxes 32, carried by the crosspiece 33, and has springs 3:1: to yieldingly press the roller radially against the periphery of the printing-form 7.
35 are screws to adjust the tension of the springs 34.
In the operation of the machine the pressure device Sis revolved around the printing- The exact predetermined transform and bears against the outer side of the flexible basic surface, pressing it by scraping contact radiallyinward against the periphery of the printing-form, and thereby imposing the designs of the basic surface upon the printing-form, these designs being thus located in a precise predetermined position both longitudinally and transversely upon the printing-form. During the revolution of the pressure device the printing-form is held against rotation, and thus is stationary. It will be understood, however, that it is not essential that the printing-form be entirely and at all times immovable or s ationary. For example, the printing-form might be held immovable or stationary while the pressure device is revolved through a short are to impose the design or designs upon a portion of the periphery of the printing-form. Then the basic surface and printing form may be moved backward through this same are, with the pressure of the presser device removed. Then the printing-form may be locked again immovably in place and the pressure device revolved through the same short arc to impose another portion of the designs upon the printing-form, as before. This same operation may be repeated until every portion of the designs has been imposed upon the printing-form. The operation of the pressure device 30 is the same as that of the device 8, except that in the former the roller 31 rolls over the outer surface of the basic surface instead of scraping over it. The printing-form may be a curved shell or it may be a complete cylindrical shell adapted to be supported on a form-support in the manner shown in the drawings, or it may be a solid curved or cylindrical body or a hollow curved or cylindrical shell-like body of such thickness as to require no separate form-su pport. It is pref erably, but not essentially, a complete cylinder.
Some of the advantages of this invention may be attained in imposing designs upon a flexible printing-form from a curved or cylindrical basic surface. To accomplish this result, a curved or cylindrical basic surface may be mounted on the main frame in the same way as the printing-form 7, and a flexibleprinting-form, which may be made of zinc, aluminium, or other suitable material, may be arranged in the same way as the basic surface 24. The revolving pressure device would then press the flexible printing-form into contact with the stationary basic surface in the same way as the basic surface 2i is pressed into contact With the printing-form '7.
It will be understood that various other changes in the form and arrangement maybe made without departing from the scope of the invention.
\Vhile the invention is applicable to theart of making printing-surfaces, whether lithographic or planographic, intaglio or relief when developed, and is an improvement in IOL v such art, it is of special advantage in the art of making lithographic or planographic print ing-surfaces. 1
