GEORGE DI HAWORTH,
ATENT FFICE;
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GRAlN -DRlLL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 659,227, dated October 9, 1900.
Application filed J ly 19, 1900.
T0 (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. HAWORTH, of the city of Chicago, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Drills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for lifting and yieldingly depressing the runners or furrow-openers of grain-drills and similar implements. It is exemplified in the structure hereinafter described and it is defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of an embodiment of my invention, showing the runners supported at about the level of the ground. Fig. 2 is a similar elevation showing the runners forced yieldingly into the soil. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of one of the brackets used to connect the draft-bars of the runners with the front cross-bar of the drillframe.
The bracket 1 has pivot-pins I on which the draft-bars swing, and depending-fingers 1 which hold the bars on the pins while the bars are in operative posit-ions. The fingers are far enough from the pins to permit the bars to be slipped onto the pins narrowwise, and when the bars are in operative positions the upper ends of the bars extend behind the fingers and hold the bars in connection with the bracket. Central lugs 1 provide means for connecting springs with the bracket.
The draft-bars 2 are pivoted at their upper ends on the pins of the bracket or are otherwise pivotally connected with the drill-frame, and their lower ends embrace and are secured to the front end of the furrow-opening runner or shoe 3. A bent lever 4. is pivotally con nected with the draft-bars at 5 and it extends upward and backward toward the seed-tube 10 of the runner. A stop is provided to prevent upward swing of lever 4 on pivot 5 beyond a certain limit, and in this instance such stop consists of a pin 6, inserted through a hole in the lever in position to strike against the draft-bars when the lever has reached the limit of its upward independent swing. The rear end of the lever is preferably forked to straddle the seed-tube, so that the lever may Serial No. 24.130- (No model.)
be held by thetube in line with the runner and side wabble be avoided. The pivot 5 of lever 4 is near the lower ends of the draftbars. In this instance the lever extends upward and approaches the pivot of the draftbars before turning rearward, and a spring 7 connects with the forward extension of the lever and with the lug 1 of the bracket 1. A plurality of hitch-holes 8 are preferably made in the lever, so that the connection of the spring with the lever may be shifted and the application of spring-tension to the lever be varied.
The runner 3 is raised or lowered by force applied to the lever 4. in the rear of the fulcrum thereof, and downward pressure on the lever is exerted on'the runner to an extent dependent on the strength of spring 7. If the spring were omitted, the lever would swing downward without affecting the furrow-former; but the resistance of the spring to the downward swing of the lever is transmitted to the runner as downward pressure thereon. The lift of the furrow-former is independent of the spring, and the point in the swing of the lever at which upward motion is imparted to the runner depends on the location of the stop 6. In Fig. l the stop is shown in contact with the draft-bars and upward stress on the leveris imparted to the runner through the bars.
The means employed to raise and lower lever 4 are independent of this invention; but they preferably comprise a rock-shaft, as 13, a lever 14 to rock the shaft-arms l2, fixed on the rock-shaft, and rods or bars 11 extending from the arms to levers 4.
I claim 1. The combination with a furrow-former hitched at its forward end to swing vertically, of a lever pivotally connected with the draftbar of the furrow-former in the rear of the pivot thereof and a spring to impart down- .ward pressure on the lever to the furrowformer, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a furrow-former hitched at its forward end to swing vertically, of. a lever pivotally connected with the draftbar of the furrow-former in the rear of the pivot thereof and an extension-spring hitched to the lever and extended forward therefrom, whereby downward pressure on the lever is yieldingly imparted to the furrow-former.
'3. The combination with a furrow-former hitched at its front end to swing vertically, of a bent lever pivoted to the draft-bar of the furrow-former in the rear of the pivot thereof and extended upward and backward, and an extension-spring hitched to the lever at the rearward turn thereof and extended forward therefrom.
4. The combination with a furrow-former hitched at its front end to swing vertically, of a lever pivotally connected with the d raftbar of the furrow-former back of the pivot thereof, a spring to impart downward pressure on the lever to the furrow-former and a GEO. D. H A\VORTH.
