To all whom it may concern:

- Be it known that I, JOSEPH AARONS, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michi gan, have invented a certain new and useful I Improvement in Vending Devices; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- IO pertains to make and use the same, reference,

being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. My invention has for its object a novel automatic coin-controlled vending and advertising machine; and it-consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter. described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is wide elevation. Fig. 2 is avertical cross-section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 illustrates details of the sprocket and clutch mechanism. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4 4, Fig. 2. My invention aims to provide in a single coin-controlled machine mechanism for vending certain desired articles of merchandiseas cigars, for example 'and also an advertising device consisting of a movable sheet bear- 5 ing desired advertisements, the advertisingsheet being preferably movable back of a transparent portion of the case.

I carry out my invention as follows: As

Within the coinrunway at a suitable point is located a gate h, pivotally supported thereon, as indicated at 11, the gate normally closing an openingj in the runwaythereat, a suitable weight being attached to one end of the gate, as indicated at It. 0pposite the gate and adjacent to the upper end, thereof the interior of the runway may be provided with a shoulder (indicated at 1) arranged to force the coin .or deflect it against the upper end of the gate, whereby the gate will be compelled to swing open sufficiently for a coin of proper weight to pass the shoulder Z. The weight connected with one end of the gate, however, is so proportioned that u when a slug or other counterfeit coinor device is inserted into the runway the gate'willtilt wide open to discharge the-slug or counterfeit piece from the runway. Toward the base of the chamber yis a gate or door 2, which may be hinged to a wall of the chamber 11 (indicated by the numeral 1,) the hinge being indicated at the numeral 2. The gate 2 is so constructed and arranged relative to the adjacent parts as to permit but an article of merchandise at the base of the storage-chamber-as a cigar, for example-t0 a single article from the base of the storagechamber, and also permitting the articles in said chamber to descend, so that another artielc of merchandise will rest upon the base 5. The spring restores the gate to normal position above t hearl icle of merchandise resting upon the base 5 and between said lastnamed articleand the articles thercabovc, the gate in its restored position separating the articles above the last in the storage-chamber from that at the base of the chamber and supporting the articles thereabove. When the fingers In strike the door .2, the door is forced open to permit the merchandise to be discharged, the spring 3 restoring the door to closed position. The door is preferably provided with spring-arms (indicated at 4) projecting into the lower portion of the chamber y and into the path of the descending merchandise-as cigars, for exam ple-the springarms yielding, if necessary, so as not to damage the goods in the base of the storagechamber.

The base 5 of the chamber y is preferably curved adjacent to the door .2. The base 5 is provided with a series of openings adjacent to the fingers w, as indicated at (3, said fingers passing through said openings or recesses 6 as they are rotated. The fingers ware upturned at their outer extremities, so as to engage behind a single cigar to throw outa single cigar and to hold back within the chamber y the remaining cigars.

The shaft 1' when free to move may be actuated by a crank 7 by the operator. At the base of the runway I prefer to locate an 0scillatory portion 8, which may be pivoted, as indicated at 0. A coin when it has descended to the end of the runway preferably comes into position behind a transparency 10 in the case, a subsequent coin coming upon the outer end of the tilting portion 8, throwing the previous coin off from the runway into a receptacle 11. The runway adjacent to the end of the arm on is preferably made bulging, as indicated at 12, to permit the passage of the coin. The shaft 1 is shown provided with sprocket-wheels 13 and 14 for actuating the advertising-sheet, (indicated at 15.) Toward the top of the case is a feed-roll, (indicated at 16,) a storage-roll being journaled in the case therebeluw, (indicated at 17.) The shaft of the feed-roll 16 is provided with a sprocketwheel 18, connected with the sprocket-wheel 13 upon the shaft- 0, as by a chain 19. The shaft of the storage-101117 is provided with a sprocket-wheel, (indicated at 20,) connected with the sprocket-wheel 14 by a chain 21. The advertising-sheet 15 may be passed over suitable rollers, (indicated at 22,) so located as to carry the advertising-sheet behind a transparency or pane of glass (indicated at 23) in the frame a.

mechanism more specifically which I prefer to employ in this connection; but I would have it understood that I do uotlimit myself solely thereto. The clutch mechanism for the shafts of the two rollers 16 and 17 may be similar. Thus, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6, the shaft of one of the rollsas the shaft of the roll 16, for instauce-provided with the sprocket 18, may be provided with a tubular sleeve,(indicated at 24.) The sprocket-wheel 18 may be constructed with an elongated recess 25 on its inner face and the sleeve 24 with opposirely-projecting pins 26 and 27, arranged to enter the recess 25 when the sleeve 24 is forced in a corresponding direction, and thereby clutch the sprocket-wheel. To actuate said sleeve, I provide,preferably, aspringarm 28, engaged with the sleeve upon the shaft of the upper roller, the sleeve upon the shaft 17 of the other roller being also provided with a springarm 29. These arms overlap one another, as indicated in Fig. 1, at their outer extremities, as indicated at 30.

Fulcrn med to the case is a bell-crank lever 31, one arm of which projects into the path of the moving advertising-sheet 15, the sheet being provided with a lug or similar device (indicated at 32) to engage the adjacent end of the lever 31 and trip it. The opposite end of said lever is engaged with a shifting-rod, (indicated at 33.) This rod is essentiallybailshaped and is pivoted intermediate its ends, as indicated at 34, the opposite end thereof being constructed with a hook to be engaged by an additional tripping-lug 35 on the ad- Adjacent to the lever 31 is a wedge-shaped block, (indicated at 36,) and adjacent to the arm 29 is a wedge-shaped block 37. When the lever 31 is tripped by the lug 32, the opposite end of said lever is thrown downward against the wedge-shaped face of the block 36, thereby crowding outward or away the lever 3l,which before tripping bears against the spring-arm 28, thereby throwing the corresponding clutch into operation. At the same time the lever-arm 29 is released to throw its corresponding clutch into operation. It will be obvious that when the opposite end of the shifting-rod 33 comes in contact with the lug 35 the clutch mechanism is reversed.

The Wheel d is preferably provided with numerals upon one of its faces, the adjacent face of the cover f being transparent. The transparent face may bear upon its surface any desired character or index. It will be obvious that when a coin is inserted into the periphery of the wheel to rotate the Wheel the wheel would have a slight rotation after the coin was discharged. By this means an element of chance is afforded by numbering the wheel and noting the number on the wheel stopping adjacent to the index character above named.

It will be observed that every time a coin is inserted into the runway an article of mer- IIO chandise may be delivered by turning the shaft 7", as by the crank 7; The turning of said crank at the same time moves the advertising-sheet.

The base of the case may be made transparent, as indicated at 41, said base being em-' ployed as an additional storage-chamber for the merchandise to be located in the storagechamber 12 the transparent face 41 enabling the merchandise in the face of the case to be displaced.

The sprocket-wheel 18 is shown provided with a hub 38 and with an inner sleeve 39, threaded at its on ter end to engage in the case a, the shaft 16 passing through said sleeve. This is a convenient way of securing the sprocket wheels in place and the other sprocket-wheels may be secured in a similar manner. A pin 40 may hold the hub in the sprocket-wheel upon the sleeve 39.

What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with a case, of a storage-chamber provided with a swinging gate toward the lower end thereof and above its base, a rotatable shaft provided with delivery mechanism to discharge merchandise from said chamber, said gate arranged to swing outward when an article of merchandise is discharged from the chamber and when in normal position to separate the lower article in said chamber from the articles thereabove, and to support the articles thereabove thereupon, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a case, provided Q with a recessed base, of a storage-chamber, a rotatable shaft at the base of the chamber provided with fingers to rotate through the corresponding recesses of the base to discharge merchandise from said chamber, and a swin ging gate above said base normally projecting into the storage-chamber, for the purpose described.

3. The combination with a case, of a storage-chamber, a rotatable shaft located at the base of the storage-chamber, an additional rotatable shaft, means to actuate the latter shaft, means connecting the two shafts whereby the shaft at the base of the chamber will be actuated by the other shaft, the shaft at the base of the chamber provided with delivery mechanism to deliver merchandise from the storage chamber and a swinging gate above said base, for the purpose set forth.
