UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. THOMPSON, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
GAGE FOR CARPENTERS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 658,881, dated October 2, 1900.
Application filed February 2,1899. Serial No. 704,241. (No model.)
[0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. THOMPSON, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Gages for Carpenters Use, of which the following, read in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
In the drawings, Figure l is an isometrical projection of a gage embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section.
The gage, as shown, comprises the staff 2, on which the collar 3 is arranged for sliding movement and adjustably fixed thereto by set-screw 4. The staff 2 carries a fixed point or cutter 5, also a similarly-fixed point or cutter 6, and has ahead or end plate 7. On the staff 2 is an auxiliary gage-plate 8, arranged for movement longitudinally from and toward the cutter 5, and it is fixable adjustably to the staff by means of the screw 9.
The staff 2 has a central longitudinal bore or chamber 10, from which the slot 17 opens outwardly through the staff, and in said chamber is arranged the slide in screwthreaded connection with the shaft 14, and it carries the point or cutter 24, projected through the slot 17, as shown. Said shaft 14 is arranged in the staff with its end projecting to afford the take-hold 16, whereby to revolve the shaft Whenever it is desirable for moving the slide 20, and consequently adjusting the cutter 24.
Having now described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire by Letters Patent to secure, is
1. In a device of the character-indicated, in combination, the hollow stafi 2, the collar 3, and the auxiliary gage 8; said collar and auxiliary gage being independently adjustable on said stafi 2, and a slide adjustably secured on the staff; substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character indicated, the staff 2 having the fixed cutter 5, and slide 20 in combination with the collar 3 and the cutter 24and adjusting connections whereby the-collar and'cutter 24 are made adjustable on the staff 2, and cutter 6 extending through the slide and secured to staff 2; substantially as described.
3. A device of the character indicated comprising in combination, the stafi 2 carrying fixed cutters 5 and 6, slotted slide 20, through the slot of which the cutter 6 extends, the
auxiliary gage 8, the collar 3, the cutter 24 and the adjusting connections whereby said auxiliary gage 8, collar 3, and cutter 24 are separately adjustable on the staff; substantially as described.
The foregoing specification is read and subscribed to by me, this 31st day of January, A. D. 1899, in presence of two subscribing witnesses. GEORGE H. THOMPSON.
Witnesses:
