UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATHEw E. JONES, OE LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS, AssIeNoR 0E ONE- HALE To WILLIAM EARRELL, 0E SAME PLACE.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,850, dated October 2, 1900.
Application filed December 1I 1899. Serial No. 738,896. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that LMATHEW F.JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massach usetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pipewrenches generally, but more particularly to that class wherein the device is adapted to be used on pipes of varying diameters; and the object thereof is to improve the construction of this class of devices whereby the desired result can be effectually attained.
With this object in view my invention consists in certain details of construction, all of which will be fully described hereinafter,
pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the several figures of the drawings,in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the wrench ready for use; and Figs. 2 to 6, inclusive, are detailviews of the rigid and pivoted jaws in their several adjust-ments, the shank of the rigid jaw being broken away.
Referring nowvto the drawings by referencenumerals, 10 represents the shank or lever, one end of which terminates in a handle, while the other end terminates in a projecting foot 11, extending at a tangent to the longitudinal center of the lever lO, said foot forming the rigid jaw of the wrench. It will be noticed that the upper and lower edge of this foot 11 is toothed or notched, as at 12 and 13,
respectively, the disposition of said teeth or notches being toward the toe 14, the purpose of which will be hereinafter apparent. Each longitudinal edge of the lever or shank 10 is notched at about the juncture of the foot therewith a short distance rearwardly,^the disposition of the teeth of these notches being toward the handle, as shown at 15 and 16.
At the heel of the foot 11 I provide a pivoted jaw 17, removably secured thereto by means of a threaded bolt 18. The pivotal portion of this jaw is bifurcated to form arms 19 and 20, which straddle the rigid jaw, and the engaging portion 2l of said pivoted jaw is V-shaped, so that in every adjustment, except that shown in Fig. '4, three engaging points are provided for contact with the pipe, and as the teeth 22 and 23, positioned in the inner edges of the pivotal jaw, are oppositely disposed, or nearly so, the pipe will be eectually prevented from slipping.
On the rear edge of pivoted jaw 17 is pro- 55 vided an offset or shoulder 24, which may be utilized'to infringe a nut or tap on one of the series of teeth of the rigid jaw,'and thus compensate for a nut-wrench. Of course it is obvious that the nut-wrench feature of my 6o invention may be used in any of several adj ustments; but its adaptability is most clearly shown in Fig. 5. l
In Figs. l, 2, and 3 the pivoted jawis illustrat'ed as secured to the lever in its normal 65 position, while in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 the jaw is reversed. It will readily be seen that the pipe can thus be engaged in a number of convenient ways, enabling the mechanic to make and loosen joints in many places where it 7o has been found inconvenient to Work heretofore, owing to the lack of space in corners and under sinks, floors, and the like. It is also apparent that should the teeth on one edge of the rigid jaw wear out the device could be readily rendered eectual by simply reversing the pivoted jaw and securing it in place by its pivot.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 8o ent, is j 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a lever, of a foot projecting from said lever at an angle thereto, teeth arranged on the respective edges of said 8 5 foot and disposed toward the toe thereof, a reversible jaw pivoted to said foot and provided with a V-shaped engaging portion the teeth of which are oppositely disposed and at an angle other than that assumed by the 9o first-named teeth, substantially as described.
2. In a wrench, the combination with a lever provided at one end with a foot, forwardly-proj ectng teeth arranged on the edges of said foot, rearwardly-projecting teeth arranged on the edges of the lever at the j uncture of the lever, and foot, and a pivoted V- shaped jaw adapted to hold a pipe in contact alternately with any of the above-named teeth and formed with a shoulder on its convex roo surface, subtantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MATHEW F. JONES.
