SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 658,449, dated September 25, 1900.
Application filed June 22, 1900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT R. KEITHLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improve ments in Car-Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to car-trucks in which the transom and the upper and lower or tension and compression members of the side frames are constructed of pressed steel.
My invention has for its objects to improve the construction of the side frames and to stiffen and strengthen the connection between the transom and the side frames.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car-truck embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, showing one half of the truck-frame in elevation and the other half in section, the plane of the sectional portion being in line 2 2, Fig? 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan View of one of the side frames and the adjacent portion of the transom. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the transom.

A is the upper member, and A the lower member, of each side frame of the truck. Each of these members preferably consists of a pair of vertical webs a, connected together at one edge by a longitudinal plate a and each provided at its opposite edge with an outwardly-extending flange 64 the webs, flanges, and connecting-plate of each member being formed of a single piece of metal. The upper member of each side frame has its flanges a arranged at its base, while the lower member is inverted and has its flanges arranged at its top and secured by rivets or bolts to the flanges of the upper member, as shown. The central portion of the upper member maybe depressed below the plane of its horizontal end portions, and the central portion 'of the lower member may be raised above the plane of its end portions, While the portions of these members between their central and end portions diverge toward said end portions, as shown in Fig. 1.

The metallic transom consists of two similar members or sections F F, each of which is preferably composed of a horizontal plate f and a pair of parallel vertical webs f, arranged at the edges of said plate and each provided at its free or inner edge with an out- Wardly extending flange The flanged webs f and the connecting-platefare formed of a single piece of metal, preferably pressed steel. horizontal plate arranged at the top thereof, while the lower member is inverted or has its horizontal plate arranged at the base thereof, so that the flanges of the two members meet at about the middle of the transom, or, in other words, on the line of the neutral axis of the transom where the compression and tension strains neutralize each other. The two sections of the transom are secured together by rivets or bolts passing through their contiguous flanges. The ends of the transom bear against the inner sides of the side frames and their top and bottom plates f are provided with wings or extensions h, which project beyond the Webs f and flanges f and embrace the upper and lower sides of the side frames, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. These extensions are riveted or otherwise secured to the upper and lower members of the side frames, and their outer ends are preferably flush with the outer faces of said members. The wings it may extend laterally to the outer edges of the transom-flanges f as shown in Fig. 3, and the flanges may be continued upwardly and downwardly along the inner sides of the upper and lower members of the side frames and riveted thereto, as shown at f in Fig. 2. The side walls of the transom are formed or recessed to receive the meeting inner flanges a of the upper and lower side frame members, and the adjacent portions of the transom-flanges f are separated for the same purpose, as shown at f This forms a very strong and stiff connection between the side frames and the transom, and the peculiar construction of the ends of the transom, combined with the contracted The upper transomnneinber has its together at one edge by a longitudinal plate form of the side frames, renders the latter sightly in appearance.
I claim as my invention 1. A side frame for a car-truck composed of an upper and a lower member, each consisting of a pair of parallel upright webs connected together at one edge by a longitudinal plate, said members meeting at their central portions and being secured together by rivets passing through said central portions, and the portions of the members on opposite sides of said meeting portions diverging outwardly and terminating in horizontal end. portions which embrace the axle-boxes, substantially as set forth.
2. A side frame for a car-truck composed of an upper and a lower member, eachconsisting of a pair of parallel upright webs connected and each provided at its opposite edge with an outwardly-extending flange, said members meeting at their central portions and being secured together by rivets passing through their contiguous side flanges, and the portions of the members on opposite sides of said meeting portions diverging outwardly and terminating in horizontal end portions which embrace the axle-boxes, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with the side frames of a car-truck, of a transom consisting of an upper metallic member composed of a horizontal plate and a pair of vertical webs depending from the edges of said plate, anda lower metallic member composed of a horizontal plate and vertical webs extending upwardly from the edges thereof, the webs of the two members meeting at their inner edges and being secured together, and the horizontal plates of the two members being provided at their ends with wings or extensions which embrace the top and bottom of the side frames, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with the side frames each composed of an upper and a lower memthereto, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with the side frames of a car-truck, of a transom composed of upper and lower members provided between the top and bottom of the transom with meeting side flanges which are. riveted together, and at their ends with wings or extensions which embrace the top and bottom of the side frames,
substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with the side frames of a car-truck, of a transom composed of upper and lower members provided between the top and bottom of the transom with meeting side flanges which are riveted together, and. at their ends with wings or extensions which embrace the top and bottom of the side frames, the side flanges of the transom members extending upwardly and downwardly along the inner sides of the side frames and being riveted thereto, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination with the side frames each composed of upper and lower members provided between the top and bottom of the frame with meeting. side flanges which are riveted together, the upper member having its central portion depressed below the plane of its end portions, and the lower member having its central portion raised above the plane of its end portions, and a transom provided at its ends with wings or extensions which embrace the depressed and raised portions of said members, substantiallyas set forth.
