ALBERT W PRESTON, 'orMAzoN, ILLINOIS] Letters Patent No. 65,827, dated J1me 18, 1867.
flit gtljthlllt meat is lit flgm Ethics than an taking part at fig: time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN v Be it known that I, ALBERT W, PRESTON, of Mazon, Grundy connty,.State of Illinois, have invented certain ,new and useful Improvements in Gloves for Ilusking Corn; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilledin the art or science to which it most nearly apperta-ins to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment. I
i The nature of my invention and improvements consist in ,1naking aglovc to cover the back of the hand, thumb, and fingers, and the fronts of the ends of the thumband fingers, with a strap around the thumb and wrist to hold the glove in position on the hand; and in covering, the front of the fingers and thumb with a shoeing of sheet metal; and in combining with the plates on thetllnmb and fore-finger a spur or projection to pierce and open the husks of the corn also in providing the plate on the fore-finger with an arm or projection to rest on the back of the middle-finger, to prevent the plate on the fore-finger from turning; and in splitting: the backs of the fingers and providing them with lacings, so as to adapt the glove to fingers of different sizes.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing is the hack of my improved glove for hashing corn.
Figure 2 is the front. I l I In these drawings, A is the hack of the glove, cut from a single piece of leather, or other suitable material, in the formshown, or in such other form as will answer the purpose, with a amp, B, to pass around the wrist and fasten in the buckle C on the opposite edge from the strap, as shown in the drawing. That part D which forms the front-of the'thuinb, and the strap which connects it to the strap '13, may be outwith the part that forms thc ba'ck A out of the same piece of leather, or cut in a separate piece and sewed on to the piece A. The piece or part E, which forms the back and end of the thumb, is cut in proper form and sewed to the piece-D. Thenl swage a piece of sheet metal, F, long enough to fit and cover the front of the first joint of the thumb, and rivet to the leather, as shown in the drawing. A I
To split. and open the husks, I make or fasten a spur or projection, Gr,.on the-plate F. This spur may be made in a suitable and proper form, and soldered or brazed to the plate, or otherwise firmly fastened to it.
The front of the fore and little-finger may be cut on the-same piece withothe backs of those fingers, and folded around and sewed to the back; but the fronts of the middle and ring-finger are cut in separate pieces and sewed to the backs of those fingers. I
To adapt the glove to fingers of ditferent sizes, I slit down the backs of thehfingers, and punch holes each side of the slit, and put in strings to lace up the slits, as shown in the drawing, fig. 1. I now swage some pieces of sheet metal, H-H, to cover the ends and fronts of the first joints of all the fingers,.and rivet them to the leather ofthc several fingers, as shown in fig. it of the drawings. The plate swaged or formed for the forefinger may have a projection, I, to come around on the side of the finger next to the thumb, and the same plate may have another projection, J, pass up between the fore and middle-finger, andI-bent to fit on to the back of the latter, to prevent the plate from turning on the fore fing er. I- make a spur or projection, K, and fasten to the plate on the fore-finger bys'oldering, brazing, or otherwise, to be used in conjunction with the spur 'F in opening the husks on the ears of corn.
I claim a hashing-glove, made to cover the back of the hand, thumb, and fingers; and thefronts of the, ends or first joints of the thumb and fingers, with a strap aropnd the thumb and wrist, substantially as shown and described.
I claim a hashing-glove, with the front of the fingers and thumb covered or shod with sheet metal, substantially as described.
And in combination with the plate on the thumb, I claim the-spur or projection G on said plate.
And in combination with the plate on the fore-'fingenI claim the spur or projection K on said plate for opening the husks on the ears of corn. 7 V
And in combination with theplate on the fore-finger and the spur for opening the husks, I claim the projection or arm J, to rest on the back; of the middle-finger, to prevent the plate from turning on the forefinger.
I claim making the backs of the fingers to lace up, substantially as described, so as to adapt the glove to fingers of different sizes.
ALBERT W. PRESTON.
