Description

No. 658,205. Patenfed sept. I8, mno. I E. H. N. cLAHKsoN.
i BOTTLE CARRIER.
(Application filed July 9, 1900.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD H. N. OLARKSON, OF LAURAVILLE, MARYLAND.
BOTTLE-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATIN forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,205, datedSeptember 18, 1900. Application filed Ju1y` 9, 1900. serai No. 22,999. (No modem To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. N. CLARK- sON, of Lauraville, inthe county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Bottle-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
In the description of the said invention which follows reference is made to the accom panying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure l is a top View of the improved bottle-carrier. Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. l,taken on the dotted line .r Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are enlarged details of the bottle-carrier and hereinafter fully described.
Referring now to the drawings, A represents an open box consisting of the sides a, ends o, and the bottom c. The ends are bound to the sides by bands d, of sheet metal, and the ends have the usual handle-holes f.
B and C are partitions which divide the box A into the bottle'compartments or pockets D. The partitions B are at a right angle with the ones C, and where the partitions intersect they are halved together in the ordinary manner, one strip being slotted from the top and the other from the bottom.
E E are posts, one being situated at each intersection of the partitions B and C. VThese posts serve to hold the partitions in a position considerably above the bottom c of the box, as is commonin bottle-carriers. The posts E have the usual slots g and h to receive, respectively, the partitions B and C, and in addition they are grooved longitudinally at the corners, the grooves being denoted by j. The partitions where they intersect are cut out from the lower edge, and the spaces c formed thereby have a width corresponding .with the distance across the grooved corners of the posts and a depth that will bring the lower edges of the partitions well over the unslotted portion of the posts, as shown in Fig. 2. By this construction the partitions clamp the posts and prevent, to some extent, their tendency to split if struck a glancing blow by a bottle when inserting it in a pocket, and at the same time the edges of the partitions adjoining the posts are held laterally by the projecting lips m at the sides of the grooves j, and the partitions may, therefore, be formed of thinner stu than is generally -used Without impairing their strength. In using thinner partitions the boxes are reduced both in length and width, which is a decided advantage in .stacking the carriers during will be seen that the octagonal pockets D have sides of equal length. This construction serves to keep the bottles steadier than where the sides of the pockets formed by the posts E are shorter than those formed by the partition-strips, the bottles in the construction shown having less movement diagonally of the box.
I claim as myinvention;
l. In a bottle-carrier comprising bottlepockets formed by partitions at right angles, and posts situated where the partitions intersect, which are slotted out to receive the said partitions, the said partitions cut out at the lower edge toform spaces of a width equal to the distance across the corners of the posts, so as to admit of the partitions being passed down and over the posts below the slots in which the partitions are seated, substantially as, and for the purpose specified.
2. In a bottle-carrier comprising bottlepooket-s formed by partitions at right angles, and posts situated at the intersection of the partitions, which posts are slotted to receive the said partitions, the said posts grooved longitudinally .at their corners below the bottom of the slots in which the partitions rest, and the said partitions cut out so as to clamp the postsacross their corners, the edges of the partitions adjoining the posts resting in the said grooves, substantially as, and for the purpose specified.
EDWARD H. N. CLARKSON.
