GAS-BURNER.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,099, dated September 18, 1900. Application led November 18. 1899i. Serial No. Z3-6,773. (No model.)

Beit known that I, OscAR WIEDERHOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing in East Orange, Essex' county,New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gras-Burners, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to burners especially adapted for use with incandescent gas-lamps and will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which show a lamp in which my invention is embodied. The drawings, however, are illustrative merely of one form in which my invention may be clothed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of the lamp; Fig. 2, a horizontal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing also the line 1 1, upon which the section of Fig. lis taken. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the inlet-cock, the section being taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the base-plug casing which forms a support for the burner; and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. l, showing the relations of the parts of the gas-regulator. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view of the upper end of the burner, the section being taken at right angles to the section-line l l of Fig. 2, upon which the section Fig. 1 is taken.
In the drawings, ais a suitable nipple or base-plug casing having a conical passage therein for the reception of the rotary gascontrolling cock or plug b. An externallythreaded hollow plug-casing c projects from the base-plug and is pierced laterally to form apertures d for the passage of gas. The plug c terminates in a conical obstruction c', which is adapted to enter the aperture c2 in a thin plate c3, which is spun vinto place in the internally-threaded sleeve c4, which works upon' the threaded plug c, being operated by the handle c5. The casing e is supported by the base-plug casing and is shown as apertured at e for the passage of the handle e5 of the movable sleeve c4. By rotating the movable sleeve it will ride on the screw-threads, and thus will be raised or lowered, so that the obstruction c will enter the aperture c2 to a greater or less extent, whereby the iiow of the gas through the said aperture will be regufated. The plate c3 is so thin that it will not 'dredth of an inch. laterally with air-passages e2, through which 2 the air is drawn by the inrush of gas. f is a if the said plate were thick. ing e, being held in place at the top by the flaring ring h3, by which its upper end is closed, and at the bottom by means of a ring e3, secured in the casing e, by which its lower end is closed, so that the air and gas mixture which is drawn into the miXing-chamberf will escape laterally therefrom through the apertures f2, will thence envelop the mixingchamber, thereby becoming heated, will pass through the foraminous casing throughout its entire extent, (dependent upon the pressure,) and will be delivered to the burning-point of the burner around the aring edge h3v of the spreader.
A by-pass tube j is seated in the base-plug casing ct and communicates with the axial,
passage a thereof by a slot in the tapered plug b when the tapered plug is swung into one of its positions where the flow of gas to the main burner is cut off. This 1Icy-pass may be controlled by a suitable screw-valve a2. The by-pass tube extends upwardalong the outside of the mixing-chamber and passes through one of the lateral orifices or apertures therein and extending through the spreader in the middle of the burner terminates at about the burning-point of the said burner. A burner constructed as shown in the drawings is especially adapted for heating the mantle, as, owing to the construction thereof and especially to the presence of the foraminous casing i, the gas will be very thoroughly and efficiently mixed with air and the Bunsen flame will be annular and very intense.
Having described my invention, what Iv claim, and desire to seen re by Letters Patent,
1. In a burner, the combination of a mixing-chamber having lateral gas-delivering openings at or near its upper end and a foraminous casing su rrounding the said mixingchamber and extending below the said openings and a spreader located above the openings of the mixing-chamber, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a burner, the combination of a tubular mixing-chamber closed at its upper end and provided with lateral gas-deli vering openings and a foraminous casing surrounding the said mixing-chamber and extending below the said openings.
3. In a burner, the combination of a mixing-chamber provided with lateral gas-delivering openings, a foraminous casing snrrouuding the said mixing-chamber and formi ing an annular chamber with the wall of the said mixing-chamber, substantially as described.
4:. In a burner, the combination of a mixing-chamber closed at its upper end and provided with lateral gas-delivering openings and a foraminous casing surrounding the said mixing-chamber and extending above and below the said openings.
5. In a burner, the combination or a mixing-chamber closed at its upper end and provided with lateral openings and a t'oraminons casing surrounding the said mixing-cham ber at such a distance therefrom as to form with the said mixing-chamber an open space for the more thorough commingling of the air and gas mixture, the said foraminous casing being closed at its upper and lower portions, whereby the gas and air mixture will be projected laterally from the mixing-chamber into a space where the air and gas will be thoroughly commingled and pass ont laterally through the interstices of the foraminous casing.
6. In an incandescent gasburner, the combination of a mixing-chamber provided with lateral openings at or near thetop thereof, a foraminons casings'urrounding the said mixing-chamber at a suicient distance therefrom to form an annular chamber in which the air and gas mixture can be more thoroughly commingled, the said foraminous easing being closed at its top and bottom, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
