JOHN W. COBB, OF MELROSE, MASSACHUSETTS. Letters Patent Nb. 65,794, dated June 18, 186i.
IMPROVED MACHINE FOR FILLING GYLINDRIGAL MOULDS FOR RUBBER GOODS.

TO' ALL'WHO M IT MAY oononnn;
Be it known that I, JOHN W. 001313, of Melrose, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an improved Machine for Filling Cylindrical Moulds for Rubber Goods; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the letters of reference marked thereon. v
The nature of my invention consists in so arranging, by means of gearing, a pair of rolls, one of which has upon its cylindrical surface impressions or moulds, the other being smooth, that the one having the moulds shall not revolve as fast as the smooth or working-in roll, thus creating a rubbing friction between them.,
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and use. In the accompanying drawings-' Figure 1 is a perspective view of the entire machine.
Figure 2 is a plan of the same.
Figure 3 is an end view of the same.
Figure 4 is a cross vertical section of the same.
C represents a floor or bed, upon which the machine is built. B B B B are four legs or standards, resting upon the base, and being framed intothe endpieces of the blocks A A, form a support for the machine. In practice, it is best'to make the whole machine of cast iron, though other material will do. The end-pieces or head-blocks A A, being provided with suitable housings and boxes, hold the journals of the rolls S M R. The rolls'S M R are made hollow, and are each provided withsteam pipes, so that when the machine is in operation the rolls are kept at the desirable temperature. The centre roll M has cut into its surface moulds, patterns, or figures, as represented by E F, E F, E F, figs. 1 and 2. I p
' In the drawings, thc mould represented is for making a ventilating rubber inner sole. I The rolls S and M are geared together by the gears L, K, so as to revolve with the same rapidity the object of the roller S being to cause a piece of cloth, which passes between the rolls S and M, to adhere to the back of the article moulde'd when it is desirable to do so, or to smooth or consolidate the moulded article in case the cloth is not used. The rolls M and R are geared together by the gears G H, figs. 2 and 3. The gear G being considerably larger than H, the roll R revolves with a greater velocity than M. The action thus produced between the two' rolls causes the rubber material to be rubbed or ground into the mould in a manner which gives a much better result than that obtained by simply pressing in, as the case would be if the two rolls revolved with the same velocity.
This machinemay be applied to themanufacturo of goods having raised or moulded figures upon their surfaces, as well as to making moulded articles. i
I am well aware that rollsare in common use, one moving faster than the other, for the purpose of grinding rubber, and also for the purpose of working it into the interstices of cloth, Ito.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- So connecting, by gear or otherwise, the pattern-roll M with the filling-roll R, that the said filling-roll R shall always revolve with greater rapidity than the pattern-roll M, made substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
' JOHN W. COBB.
