Description

@uitrit tetes aimt @Hirn CHARLES BEMIS, OF MISHAVVAKA, INDIANA.

IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
De it known that I, CHARLES BEMIS, of Mishawaha, in the coun ty of St. Joseph, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Pumps; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof reference heir-.gg had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. l
In the annexed drawings making part oi" this specification, A represents a hex, with an open bottoni, in which the operating devices oi' the pump are placed. I3 D represent tiro cylinders which are secured in the hex A in a horizontal position, with their heads facing each other, and a short distance apart. J J represent two pistoirheads, which are provided with openings through their centres, which said openings are covered by suitable valves. These pistonheads t snugly in the cylinders B B. .7) l1' are piston-rods which run through the cylinder-heads, and connect with their inner ends to the piston-heads J J. The outer ends of the rods I) are secured to the lower end et' u lever, E. D represents a pipe ywhich is situated Within the box A, and which has an. elbow, D', at each end. These elbows lead into the cylinders I3 B nea-r their outer ends. A pipe, C, which leads into the water of the well or cistern, connects to the pipe D at its centre, and on each side of its point of connection within the pipe .D are two valves c c. A pipe, II, similar te pipe D, is also situated Within the box A. This pipe H has two elbows H, which enter the'cylinders near their inner ends, and has connectedv to it at its centre a pipe, G, which lea ds up andl delivers the Water which is drawn from the well. Valves are placed in the elbows H H. A narrow hex, A2, is secured upon top of the box A which encases the lever E. The lever E is provided at its upper end with a long slot, in which one end of a crank-shaft, F, plays to give it an oscillating motion. The crank-shaft F has its hearing and is confined in one side of the narrow box A2.
In drawing water with this device, the crank-shaft F is turned, which gives an oscillating motion to the lever E, and :1s-said lever worksit causes the piston-heads. .I .I to play backward and forward in the cylinders I3 B. These piston-heads draw water through'the pipes D and C at one stroke, and discharge it through pipes H and G at the other, thus causing a continuous flow of. water from the well or cistern. This apparatus can be used as a pump, or by attaching hose to the mouth of the discharge pipe it may housed as an engine for throwing water in case of re.
Having thus fully described my invention, nh-.it I ela-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement herein set forthof the cylinders B with their piston-heads and rods, the pipes D and H with their valves, and the slotted lever E'with its crank, all constructed and used with the boxes A A, as and for the purpose herein specified. 4
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this sixth day of March, 1867.
CHARLES Bains.
