SIGNAL BELL...
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 656,768, dated August 28, 1900. Application filed February 8, 1900. Serial No. 4,551. (No model.)
This invention relates to improvements in V signal-bells, and more particularly to that class which is designed for use on street-railway, tramway, and like vehicles; and the object of the improvements is to provide means whereby such signal-bells or signal devices are made more reliable and more efiective in use; and with this end in view the invention consists of a signal device comprising two independent'bells and a suitable clapper-andplungermechanism adapted to sound the said bells simultaneously, so that if one becomes damaged or broken the other still remains effective.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partlyin section, of the improved signal-bell, the clapper-and-plunger mechanism being in the position of rest; and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in their working position for sounding the bells.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the views.
The two bells aand b, independent of each other, are freely suspended from a common screw-bolt m, supported by a suitable frame or base-plate t'. The clappers or hammers c and at (one for each bell) are carried by bent levers c and d, fulcrumed side by side at o and 01 respectively, in a slotted bracket e, extending from a standard 70 of the base plate The clapper levers are so arrangedthat their weighted ball-shaped ends or heads 0 and cl, respectively, will tend to keep the opposite or outer ends, which project through the slotted bracket 6, together, Fig. 1.
Pivoted to the standard 7 at f is a doublearmed lever f, one arm of which is formed with a wedge-shaped beak f adapted to be thrown or moved by a blow or shock between the said outer or free ends of the bent levers in orderto part the latter and to operate thereby the clappers. For imparting to the beak f such a blow or shock a plunger g, sliding in a socket g, is arranged above the other or free end f of the leverf. By a blow upon the head h of the plunger 9 the latter slides down and oscillates the double-armed lever f. The wedge-shaped end or beak f of the latter will thereby be forced, between the adjacent arms of the bent levers c and al and the clappers c and d thus be caused to strike and sound both bells a and 1) simultaneously, in the construction shown the large bell a, for instance, being struck on the outer side by the clapper cl, While the small bell b is struck on the inner side by the other clapper c, as will be clearly understood from Fig. 2. The blow, and thereby the sounding of the bells, may be repeated as the plunger is again raised by the back swinging or back oscillation of the lever f, which is effected by the action of the weighted clapper-levers upon the wedgeshaped beak f In some cases it maybe advantageous to effeet a more positive return of the clapper-1evers into their position of rest, which may be accomplished by means of suitable springs. Instead of employing a double-armed lever f, 'as above described, I may so arrange the bells and clapper-levers that the plunger may be caused to act directly upon the said clapperlevers. For this purpose the said plunger may be provided with a wedge-shaped end or beak and with a suitable spring for returning the same to its inoperative position. As these modifications are selfevident, they need no further description and illustration.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A signal or call bell comprising two concentrically-arranged bells, bell-crank hammer or clapper levers c d, the actuating-lever f and the pushaod it, said parts arranged for operation substantially as described.
