nrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MACARIUS PAIDASSY, OF ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA.
HYDRAULIC DOOR-SHUTTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,699, dated August 28, 1900.
Application filed April 10, 1899.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MACARIUS PAIDASSY, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, and a resi= dent of St. Petersburg, Russia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Door-Shutting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object improved means for shutting doors, especially in water-tight partitions on ships or vessels, by the aid of hydraulic pressure from boilers or any other source.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a slide-door provided with my hydraulic device, one of the hydraulic cylinders be ing shown in section. Fig. 2 represents a boiler as a source of pressure, with valves and pipes leading to my hydraulic cylinders, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly in sec tion, of the device represented on Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a modification of my hydraulic device as applied to a hinged door. Fig. 5
is a horizontal section of same.
In the arrangement represented in Figs. 1, 2, and 8 I fix to the watertight partition on both sides of the slide-door I-I two vertical hydraulic cylinders F and F. The upper ends of these cylinders are open and the lower ends are in communication with the main water-pressure pipe M, leading from the boiler or from any other source of hydraulic pressure. The cylinders F F are provided with pistons and piston-rods. The upper ends of these rods are connected with arms E E, fixed to the door H, which is thus held open. To economize the water from the boiler, the main pipe M is also in communication with a pipe G, designed to be connected with a suitable source, which permits the main pipe to be filled with water other than that from the boiler before the boiler-pressure is admitted, and then after shutting the valve G to apply the boiler-pressure by opening the valve A. The main pipe is also provided with a double valve B, which opens toward the door and prevents the backflow of the water. Near the cylinders F F there are emptying-cocks D D, arranged in the main pipe M and serving for emptying the cylinders F F when it is desired to shut the door. This shutting of Serial No. 712,553. (No model.)
the door H is produced by its own weight, and the door descends Very smoothly, according to the speed of emptying of the cylinders F F. The cook's D D can be controlled from any point of the ship.
In the modification represented on Figs. 4 and 5 there is but one hydraulic cylinder A hinged to the water-tight partition Pand communicating by its hollow trunnions a with the main pipe. (Not shown.) The piston-rod b of this cylinder is articulated with a curved arm N, fixed to the door 11 at the hinge side of the latter. Three other hydraulic cy1inders B, B and B are fixed on the door H and are in communication by the pipes 6, c and e and a flexible pipe D with the front end of the cylinder A, provided with a branch pipe 0 The piston-rods of the cylinders B, B and B pass through the guides m and have wedge-shaped ends 70, which by entering into lugs S, fixed on the partition P, lock the door. Between the pistons and the covers of the cylinders B B B spiral springs f are located, which draw the piston-rods I) back (when the pistons are relieved from the pressure of water) and so unlock the door. The hydraulic pressure being applied, the piston in the cylinder A is forced outward, by which movement the door is shut. On attaining its outer position, as represented on Fig. 5, the piston opens the communication by the branch pipe 0 between the main pipe (by means of the hollow trunnions at of the cylinder A) and the flexible hose D and consequently, with the cylinders B B B thus forcing the ends 76 in the lugs S and. locking the door.
It is obvious that the number of lockingcylinders B B B may be varied at will, as also the details of construction may be modified, without departing from the nature of the invention. It is also to be understood that the above-described devices can be applied not only on ships, but also to every kind of doors or shutters.
I claim as my invention 1. In a hydraulic apparatus for closing doors, the combination with the operatingcylinder and the source of supply with a main pipe connecting said source and cylinder, of
means for filling up said pipe before communicating the pressure from said source of supply, substantially as described. I
2. In a hydraulic apparatus for closing doors, the combination with a door, of an oscillating hydraulic cylinder operatively connected thereto, a plurality of cylinders carried by said door, flexible connections between said cylinders and the forward end of 10 the door operating cylinder, and lockingbolts operatively connected with the pistons of said cylinders on the doors, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
MACARIUS PAIDASSY.
