BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,689, dated August 28, 1900. Application filed February 7,19QO. Serial No. 4,385. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL G. BALD- WIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Bottle-Stopper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottle-stoppers, and has for its object to provide improved means for preventing the refilling of the bottle. It is also designed to provide for the convenientinsertion of the stopper into the bottle-neck and to prevent withdrawal thereof without damaging the stopper, and thereby indicating that the bottle has been previously opened, While at the same time facilitating the pouring out of the liquid contents of the bottle.
with these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described,shown in the accompanying drrawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being under' stood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation of the neck portion of the bottle having the improved stopper applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar View taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings are designated by like characters of reference.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the body of any ordinary bottle, having the usual neck 2, which is provided at its lower end with a valve-seat 3, having inwardly-convergent walls and designed to loosely support a conical valve 4, preferably formed of glass. The engaging Walls of the plug-sections 5 and 6.
2 and 3 of the drawings, these plug-sections are substantially semicircular in crosssection, so as to fit snugly the interior walls of the neck. The plug-section 6 is the first to be inserted in the bottle-neck and is provided at its lower end with a lateral foot or extension 7, which has a notch or perforation 8 formed in its outer end. Extending longitudinally of the inner flat face of the plugsection is a semicirculargroove 9, which terminates immediately above the foot 7 and is provided at its lower end with an enlargement 10, so as to form an upwardly and inwardlyinclined shoulder 11, which overhangs the enlarged portion of the groove. The other plug-section 5 is provided with a head 12, which rests upon the upper end of the plug-section 6 and is provided with an opening or perforation 13, alined with the upper end of the groove 9 in the other plug-section.
As indicated in Fig. lot the drawings, the
section 5 terminates short of the foot 7, so as to provide a space 14:, communicating between the notch or opening 8 and the groove 9. Adjacent to the lower end of the plug-section 5 there is provided a transverse slot 15, which extends entirely through the section and communicates with the groove 9.
To prevent Withdrawal of the plug-section 5, there is provided a glass pin 16, which is received within the slot 15 and projects at its inner end into the enlarged portion of the groove 9, while the opposite end of the pin is received Within a socket 17, formed in the adjacent wall of the bottle-neck.
In assembling the plug-sections the section 6 isfirst introduced into the bottle-neck, so that thefoot 7 may be spaced a suitable dis- 'tance above the valve 4:. The plug-section 5 is then inserted, with the inner end of the pin 16 inclined downwardly through the slot 15 and received within the groove 9, so that the outer end of the pin may not bind upon the adjacent wall of the bottle-neck. \Vhen the head 12 engages the upper end of the section 6, the outer end of the pin 16 Will be received in the socket 17. In this position of the plugsections the inner end of the pin will be in engagement with the adjacent wall of the section 6, so as to prevent accidentaldisplacement of the opposite end of the pin fromthe socket in the bottle-neck. Outward movement of the section 5 is prevented by reason of the pin being received within the socket 17, and should there be any looseness of the plug and the pin the inner end of the latter would engage the overhanging wall 11 and be forced thereby tightly into the socket, so as to prevent a complete withdrawal of the plug. It will now be apparent that the head of the section 5 overhangs the outer end of the section 6, so as to prevent access to the latter, whereby it might be moved to disengage the shoulder 11 from the pin, and thus permit an entire withdrawal of the protector.
To pour out the liquid contents of the bottle, the latter is inverted, as usual, so as to unseat the valve 4, whereby the liquid contents may pass outwardly through the valve-seat, the notch 8, the passage 14, the groove 9, and the opening 13 in the head of the plug without disturbing any of the parts of the plug. Any attempt to fill the bottle will result in a seating of the valve, and thereby effectually prevent liquid from being introduced into the bottle. It is preferable to employ a cork or supplemental stopper 18 in the outer end of the bottle-neck, so as to normally close the opening 13 and prevent ingress of foreign matter into the groove 9, which would result in a stoppage of said groove.
It will be noted that the outer end of the pin 16 is provided with an enlarged and weighted head 19, which is designed to effect a quick and positive seating of the head Within the socket 17 and also to normally maintain the pin in engagement with said socket.
WVhat is claimed is 1. The combination with a bottle, having a valve-seat in the neck thereof, of a valve looselyseated upon the valve-seat, a sectional protecting-plug received within the neck, and a locking device engaging both plug-sections and also having an interlocked connection with the neck of the bottle.
2. The combination with a bottle, having a valve-seat in the neck thereof, of a valve loosely seated therein, a sectional protectingplug received within the neck, and a lockingpin engaging both plug-sections and also received within a socket formed in the bottleneck.
3. The combination with a bottle, having a valve-seat in the neck thereof, and a valve loosely seated therein, of a sectional protecting-plug, one of the sections having a longitudinal groove, and the other section having a transverse slot, and a locking-pin extending transversely through the slot, having one end received within the groove of the other section, and its opposite end received Within a socket formed in the bottle-neck.
4. The combination with a bottle, having a valve-seat in the neck thereof, and a valve loosely seated therein, of a sectional protecting-plug, one of the plug-sections having a longitudinal groove, provided with an enlargement, the'other plug-section having a transverse! slot communicating with the groove, and a locking-pin extending in opposite directions through the slot, the inner end of the pin being received within the enlargement of the groove, and the opposite outer end being received within a socket formed in the bottle-neck.
5. The combination with a bottle, having a valve-seat formed in the neck thereof, and a valve loosely mounted upon the valve-seat, of a protecting-plu g, comprising longitudinal sections, one of the latter having a longitudinal groove in its inner face, and the other section having a head overlapping the outer end of the former section, and having an opening alined with the outer end of the groove.
6. The combination with a bottle, having a valve-seat formed in the neck thereof, and a valve loosely mounted in said seat, of a protecting-plug, comprising longitudinal sections, one of the latter having a transverse foot at its inner end, said foot being provided with an opening or perforation, and the inner face of the section having a longitudinal groove, the other section having a transverse head resting upon the outer end of the former section, and also terminating short of the foot thereof, the head having an opening or perforation alined with the outer end of the groove.
7. The combination with a bottle, having a valve-seat formed in the neck thereof, and a valve loosely fitting said seat, of a protectingplug, comprising a pair of longitudinal sections,one section having a longitudinal groove formed in its inner face and provided with an enlargement at its lower end, and a lateral foot provided with a perforation or opening, the other section having a lateral head resting upon the outer end of the former section, said head having an opening alined with the outer end of the groove, and said section also having a transverse slot communicating with the enlarged portion in the groove, and a locking-pin extending in opposite directions through the slot, the inner end of the pin being received within the enlargement of the groove, and the outer end of the pin being received within a socket formed in the bottleneck.
8. The combination with a bottle, having a valve-seat in the neck thereof, of a valve for the valve-seat, a sectional protecting-plug, and a Weighted locking-pin engaging both sections of the plug, the weighted end of the pin being seated within a socket formed in the bottle-neck.
