SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,196, dated August 21, 1900.

Beit known that I, FREDERICK C. LOVEJOY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lodi, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a View showing a portion of a carpet or rug, illustrating a corner thereof folded back and showing the fasteners connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a detached View of the retaining-disk. Fig. 4 is a sectional View showing the fastener partially connected to a carpet. Fig. 5 is a View showing a section of the carpet and illustrating the fastener properly connected to a floor.

The present invention has relation to carpet or rug fasteners; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafterdescribed, andparticularly pointed out in the claims.

Similar numerals represent corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the plate or blade of the fasteners proper, from which plate or blade are cut the attaching-tangs 2, said tangs being cut or severed from the plate or blade 1 upon their two sides and one end, leaving one end of each tang integral with the plate or blade. After the tangs 2 have been formed or out they are bent substantially at right angles to theplate or blade; but it will be understood that it is immaterial as to the exact angle, as the only object designed is to bring the tangs 2 into such a position that they can be inserted through the carpet or rug, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and their extended portions bent or folded down upon the carpet 3, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5, thereby securely connecting the plate or blade 1 to the carpet.

It will be understood that the plate or blade 1 is to be located upon the bottom. or under side of the carpet. The plate or blade 1 is provided with a downward-extending portion which downward-extending portion consists of the two members 4 and 5', the member 4 being provided with the shoulder 6, which is formed by bending a portion of the member 4 backward or under the plate or blade 1, said bend being so formed that it will form or produce a recess or groove, such as 6, which groove is for the purpose here inafter described. The member 5 of the downwardextending portion is formed of spring material and its upper end provided with the outward-extending flange 7.

The object andpurpose of forming the member 5 of spring material is to provide a means for allowing the said member 5 to be sprung toward the member 4 for the purpose hereinafter described.

The floor or other object to which it is desired to attach or fasten a carpet or rug is provided with any desired number of apertures, such as 8, which apertures may extend entirely through the floor or partially through, but must be of sufficient depth to receive the downward-extending portion of the plate or blade 1. Over the apertures 8 are located metal disks, such as 9, which disks should be countersunk into the floor or other object to which they are attached, and, as shown, said disks are provided with the apertures 10,

which apertures are formed somewhat less in diameter than the diameter of the apertures 8, by which arrangement an annular shoulder 11 is provided at the top or upper ends of the apertures S.

In use the plates or blades 1 are connected to the carpet or rug, as illustrated in Fig. 5, and a corresponding number of apertures 8 formed in the floor, and the metal disks 9 placed over the apertures and connected by means of nails 12 or their equivalents, after which the carpet or rug is brought into position to bring the downward-extending mem bers 4 and 5 directly over the aperture 10, and the downward-extending portion or tang inserted in the aperture 8 until the groove 6 comes opposite the inner periphery of the aperture 10, at which time the shoulder 6 is sprung under the annular flange 11 by means of the spring member 5.

The outward-extending flange 7, formed upon the free end of the member 5, is for the purpose of preventing the upper end of said member from being caught under the disk 9.

When it is desired to remove the carpet,

the carpet is forced in such a direction that the shoulder 6 will be disengaged from the disk 0, at which time the downward-extending portion of the fastener is free to be removed.

It will be understood that with my improved device I can connect stair-carpets without any change or alterations, and my invention can be employed in attaching all kinds of carpets and various-size rugs without reference to the place or places where they are to be used.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of a plate or blade provided with tangs, and having at one end thereof a downward-extending portion consisting of two members, one member thereof being a spring member, and the other member provided with a shoulder and groove, and the spring member provided with an outwardextending flange upon its free end, and an attaching disk, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a carpet or rug fastener consisting of a plate or blade having integral tangs, an integral downward-extending portion consisting of two members, said members located at an angle one to the other, and the member 5 being a spring member, and provided with an outward-extending flange at its free end, and the opposite member provided with a groove and shoulder, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
