SOUND COLLECTOR FOR THE EARS.
(Application filed Apr.

w mw UNITED STTES Erica.
WILLIAM G. EHRHARDT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SOUND=COLLECTOR FOR THE. EARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 656,182, dated August 21, 1900.
Application filed April 17, 1900. Serial No. 13,178. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM G. EHRHARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sound-Collectors for the Ears, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sound-collectors for the ears; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device or devices of this class which are simple in construction and operation and which may be easily and con- 7 veniently attached to the head, so as to avoid the necessity of being held in the hand, as is the case with ordinary ear-trumpets.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanyin g drawings form a part, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a head, showing the method of using my improved sound collectors; and Fig. 2,a perspective view showing the sound-collectors removed from the head.
In the practice of my invention I provide two hollow devices A, which are of the shape of the half of a truncated hollow cone, as clearly shown in the drawings, and these devices may be made of metal, hard rubber, or any other suitable material, and each is provided, at one edge or side thereof, with a longitudinallyarranged keeper B, through which is passed a tape, cord, or similar device 0, on which the sound-collectors may be adjusted, as will be readily understood.
The tape 0 may be composed of elastic or any suitable material, and if of elastic material it will be formed, as shown in the drawings, into a continuous band, which is passed over or around the upper portion of the head, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to hold the soundcollectors over the ears, with the larger ends thereof directed forwardly, and if said tape is not composed of elastic material it will preferably be divided, so that the ends thereof may be tied to produce the proper adj ustment. 7
The smaller ends of the sound-collectors are closed, as shown at D, and the larger ends open, and the edges or sides of the sound-oollectors are so formed as to lit the contour of the side of the head and the tape or band 0 will securely hold them in place, and by means of these devices I provide for the free use of the hands, as the sound-collectors when once adjusted will remain in position as long as desired.
These devices are particularly adapted for use in theaters, at the opera, or at other public amusements by those Whose hearing is defective; but it will be apparent that they may be used on any and all occasions.
The said sound-collectors are also simple in construction and very inexpensive, 'and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The herein-described sound-collectors for the ears, said collectors being shaped like the half of a truncated cone, and being hollow and open at one side and at the larger end and provided at one side or edge with a keeper or loop, and a tape or band which is passed through said keeper or loop, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described sound-collectors for the ears, consisting of devices which approximately resemble the half of a hollow truncated cone, which are open at one side, and at the larger end, and which are provided with means for securing them to the head so as to inclose the ears, substantially as shown and described.
3. The hereindescribed sound-collectors for the ears, consisting of hollow devices which are shaped like the half of a truncated cone, and which are open at one side and at the larger end, the smaller end being closed, said devices being provided with means for securing them to the head so as to inclose the ears, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 16th day of April, 1900.
WILLIAM G. EIIRHARDT.
