TO ALL PERSONS 'lO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Bc it known that I,. PATRICK QUINN, of South New Market, in the county of Rockingham, and State of New I-larnpshire, have invented an Improved Device for Arresting or Preventing a Leak in a Boiler-Tube;V and I do-hereby declare'the same to be fully describ'ed in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of whieh- Figure 1 is a side view of one form Vof it, viz, that which is intended for use when the leak is close to the en'd of a tube, or nearl its junction with the end plate ofa boiler. i

Thisiinvention may be said to be an improvement on that patented in Letters Patent of the United States numbered 39,717, dated September 1, 18613, the invention covered by such patent consisting of-a taperingspring gland and a tapering thimble, arranged one' on lthe other, a separate screw-bolt, washer, and nut being employed to force one into the' other so as to cause the entering one to expand thek other; These devices for drawing the gland upon the expanding tube by being separate from the said gland and tube, are liable to be lost or mislaid, and as the gland and tube cannotl be applied to good advantage or without risk or danger of injury to the tube without'rsuch contrivances, I have made a tapering gland and tube with screws cut on them so as to bc part of them, such tube being provided with a key orifice for receiving a key by which the tube may be revolved to expand the gland. I term the part to be expanded the gland. Irdo not, however, split it throughout its length, but only a part thereof, as when split throughout its length it is liable to leak steam throughv the opening. p j j Inthe drawings, A denotes the gland, and B the expander; C the boiler tube to be expanded, and Dthe boiler-plate in which the tube C is fixed. In iig. 1 the gland is represented as provided with a iange or head, a a, extending from its outer end, such flange being to support the gland against the plate D and make a close joint therewith. In figs. 2 and 4 the gland is a simple tube without such ange at either end, it having two of the expanders arranged and screwed into it. The gland should have a diameter corresponding with that of the bore of the tube to which it is to be applied. IThe expander i'stob-e a short tube formed conical or tapering on itsexternal surface, and with a prismatic bore, such bore being shown atb. This prismatic bore constitutes an orificev for receiving a'key for revolving the expander. A male screw, c, is cut on the outer surface of the expander, and is to enter a corresponding female screw, al, made within the gland. If preferable, the opening in the gland for receiving the female screw may be tapering, but it will suice to make either or both the screws tapering in such manner that when the expander is in the act of being screwed into the gland the latter shall be expanded by the former andagainst the tube C.
In using my invention the gland, with the expander orexpanders moved a short distance within it, is to be introduced into the pipe so as to cover and extend by in opposite directions the opening from which -the leak may proceed, after which a key should be introduced in to the expander and revolved so as to cause'it to revolve and screw into the gland and expand the latter at its end in which the gland may be, so -as to cause the gland at suc-h end to ft closely or steam-tight to the tube. Thus, when the gland is introduced within the boiler tube, it will seal the opening thereof through which the leak may.V take place,
