To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ISABELLA MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union Ridge, in the county of Oabell and State of est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Awnings, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to awnings, the object being to provide means for protecting the roofs and sides of a house or building from the rays of the sun.

It is well known that the upper rooms of residences or other houses are frequently rendered uncomfortably warm owing to the radiation of heat from the roof, and .it is designed by the present invention to obviate this condition or greatly modify it by providing an awning or covering for the roof, adapted to be supported above it at such a distance as to permit a circulation of air between the roof and awning.

The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter and defined in the appended claims, in'connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the roof-awning in position upon a building, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the house with the awning in section.

The awning comprises a piece or section 1 of any suitable fabric of sufficient size to cover the roof. Attached to the under side of the fabric are a number of coil-springs 2, arranged parallel to one another and adapted to rest upon the roof. hen the roof to be protected is of the form shown in Fig. 1, the springs 2 are bent centrally to adapt them to straddle the roof. The fabric is supported above the roof by the springs, the space 3 below the fabric constituting an air-space, the circulation of air therein assisting in cooling the roof.

From the side edges of the fabric cover 1 depend flaps 4 and 5, designed to extend down over the sides of the house. To the inner sides of the flaps 4 and 5 are secured vertically-disposed coil-springs 6, of conical form. The form of the spring serves to project the lower edges of the flaps out from the building, permitting a free circulation of air thereunder. The side flaps are preferably provided with cords 7 for raising the flaps when desired, the springs 6 collapsing when the flaps are pulled up by the cords.

I claim 1. An awning-cover for roofs, comprising a fabric cover and a plurality of coil-springs secured to the under side of the fabric.

2. An awning-cover for roofs, comprising a fabric adapted to be spread over the roof; a plurality of coil-springs secured to the under side of the fabric; a flap depending from the edge of the fabric; and coil-springs secured to the inner side of said flap.

3. An awning-cover for roofs, comprising a fabric adapted to be'spread upon the roof; coil-springs secured to the under side of the fabric to support the latter above the surface of the roof; at flap depending from the edge of the fabric; Vertically-disposed conical coilsprings secured to the inner side of the flap, and means for raising and lowering said flap.
