Description

No. 655,823. Patented Aug. :4, 1900f s. DDUGYALD.
SAW JUINTER.
(Application filed May 31, 1900.)
(No Model.)
Wl'fizew; I 5/ ade/e127" NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL DOUGALD, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAW-JOINTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 655,823, dated. August 14, 1900. Application filed May 31, 1900. S rial No. 18,579. (No modeL) for its object a modification of an ordinary form of saw-set to enable the same to be used as a saw-jointer; and to this end it comprises an ordinary saw-set provided with pivoted handles, said handles having transverse openings therethrough for receiving the file and having longitudinal slots extending from the end of said handles and intersecting the openings therein.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iwill now describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of an ordinary type of saw-set with my improvement thereon, and Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged views of the handles thereof.
The saw-set disclosed comprises the body portion 1, having integral therewith the handle 2, and having the handle 3 pivoted thereto, as at 4, the handle 3 serving to reciprocate the plunger 5, which operates in conjunction with the anvil 6 to set the saw, all of which is well known in the art and need not be further described, as itforms no part of my invention. I wish it understood, however, that my invention is not limited to the precise form of saw-set shown, but is applicable to all forms of saw-sets having handles.
The handle 2 is provided with a transverse opening '7, and the handle 3 is provided with a similar opening 8,said openings being shown as triangular in order to receive and accommodate a three-cornered file; but it is obvious that the openings may be of other forms to accommodate any of the well-known forms of files. One of the openings--as, for instance, the opening 8.-'-may be made smaller than the other, so that the file 9 when inserted in said openings maybe jammed into'and held securely by the smaller opening. As an addi= tional means for holding the file securely, I provide adjacent one of said openings a lug 10, which has a screw thread hole therein, through which passes a set-screw 11 for impinging against the side of the file and holding the latter firmly in place. Extending 1ongitudinally of the handles 2 and 3 from the outer end thereof are the slots 12 and 13,whicl1 intersect the transverse openings 7 and 8, re= spectively, said slots being for the purpose of receiving the saw-blade during the jointing operation, as shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of my device is as follows:
A file is secured in the openings 7 and 8 in the manner above described, and the slots 12 and 13 are then passed over the edge of the saw, bringing the face of the file 9 down upon the outer end of the saw-teeth when the sawset, together with the file, is moved back and forth along the length of the saw until the teeth thereof are properly jointed.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let-,
ters Patent, is+- .1. A saw-set having handles pivoted to each other and provided with transverse openings for receiving a file, and longitudinal slots ex tending from the ends of said handles and intersecting said transverse openings.
2. A saw-set having handles pivoted to each other and provided with transverse openings for receiving a file, one of said openings being smaller than the other, and longitudinal slots extending from the ends of said handles and intersecting said transverse openings.
3. A saw-set having handles pivoted to each other and provided with transverse openings for receiving a file, a lug adjacent one of said openings provided with a set-screw for engaging the file, and longitudinal slots extending from the ends of the handles and intersecting the transverse openings therein.
In testimony whereof I, the said SAMUEL DOUGALD, have hereunto set my hand.
SAMUEL DOUGALD.-
