LEO F. ADT, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
APPAREL- COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 655,178, dated August 7, 1900.
Application filed March 9, 1900. Serial No. 8,087. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEO F. ADT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and ex act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a collar which shall entirely inclose and protect the neck and yet have the appearance and effect of a standing collar, having the upper portion of its ends adapted to be turned over either slightly or in the form of wings. This I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective viewof a collar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the collar shown in Fig. 1 with its ends drawn together. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modification of my invention. Fig. 4 is a similar View of the collar shown in Fig. 3 having its ends brought together.
As illustrated in the drawings, A represents a neckband provided on one end with an extension B, adapted to be inserted between the opposite ends of said neckband and of the body 0. The lower edge of the extension Bis preferably cutaway in a curved line b, so that when the extension B is inserted between the opposite ends of the neckband A and the body 0 the lower edge of said extension B will lie above the buttonholes (1, formed in the tabs D of the body of the collar, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The upper portions of the ends of the body 0 are free from the neckband and are adapted to be turned over, so as to form wings or flaps E, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When the buttonhole-tabs D of the body 0 are brought together and the extension B of the neckband A is inserted between the opposite ends of the body and neckband, the ends of the body of the collar are held evenly in position. The front of the neck is entirely protected by the extension I) of the neckband, and a portion of such extension is exposed between the free upper portions of the ends of the body 0, as shown in Fig. 2,
I do not desire to be limited, however, to the construction of .the free upper portions of the ends of the body of the collar shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and in some instances instead of turning over such portions, so as to form flaps or wings E, as shown in such figures, I desire to extend the edges 0 of the body 0 upward in nearly-vertical lines and separate the upper portion 0 of the body from the neckband, so as to adapt such portions to be turned outward or over slightly, if desired, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4:.
I do not desire to be limited, moreover, to the construction shown for the end a, of the neckband A. This end may also be extended, if desired, so" as to give additional protection to the front of the neck.
While I regard it as preferable to cut away the lower edge of the extension B on the curved line b or otherwise, so that when the ends of the collar are brought together there will be no obstruction back of the stud or but ton which connects the tabs D of the body of the collar to the shirt-band, I do not desire to be limited to such construction, and such lower portion of the extension B may continue on the same line as the remaining portion of the neckband A.
What I claim is 1. A collar having its body provided with loose ends free to be turned outward or over from an oppositely-disposed neckband provided with an extension adapted to project beyond the opposite ends of said body and neckband, substantially as shown and described.
2. A collar having its body provided with loose ends free to be turned outward or over in the form of wings from an'oppositely-dis posed neckband provided with an extension adapted to project beyond the opposite ends of said body and'neckband, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
