\ UNITED STATES PATENT Omen.
CORNELIUS HENRY ELSKAMP, OF TELLURIDE, COLORADO.
TAPE-M EASU RE ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent K056511960, dated July 31, 1900 Application filed Deoember 26,1899. Serial No. 741,631. (Noniodel-J To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS HENRY ELs- KAMP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Telluride, in the county of San Miguel and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Tape-Measure Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to tape-measures; and its object is to provide a new and improved tape-measure attachment for the initial end of the tape and arranged for convenient attachment to a floor, stake, post, tree, or other support to allow the user of the tape-measure to readily run the tape out to a desired measurement without an assistant.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
Apractical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the post and link with the post in a folded position. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 4 l'in Fig. 2.
On the initial end of the tape A is formed or secured an eye B, engaging the inner end of a link 0, pivotally connected at its outer end with the shank D of a post D, having a head D the under side D of which is beveled to be engaged by the side arms of the links 0 when the post is in an open position to limit the opening of the post relatively to the link and to hold the post in an acute angled position relatively to the link. The
shank D of the post is preferably curved and pointed at the lower end, so that it can be readily driven into a floor, stake, post, tree, or the like, or said shank can be fixed upon a bar or the like'to permit the user of the tape-measure to run out the tape without the help of an assistant totake the desired measurement. The side arms of the link 0 engage the sides of the shank D, so that the latter can be swung between the side mem bers of the link when the device is not in use to prevent the point of the shank from catch ing in a pocket or other parts of a garment when the device is not used and is carried about bythe user.
" In order to hold the post D locked in a folded position, the shank. is formed between its point and the fulcrum with a transverse slot B, into which snap from opposite sides the inwardly-curved portions 0 of the side members of the link C, as is plainly shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, to hold the shank between the side members and the post in a locked of the opening D is preferably somewhat thicker than the opposite front portion thereof to prevent swinging of the postin the wrong direction when opening the post, as above explained.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A measuring device, comprising a tape, a link held at one end thereof and having at one side an inwardly-disposed portion, and a. post pivotally mounted on the outer end of the link and formed with an indentation adapted to be engaged by the inwardly-disposed portion of the link, to hold the post in inactive position, and the post further having a head, the under side of which is beveled to be engaged by the side arms of the links when the post is in open position, to limit the opening of the post relatively to the link.
In testimony whereof -I have signed my name to this specification in the -presenceof two subscribing witnesses. x
CORNELIUS HENRY ELSKAMP.
