UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES I. SESTER, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
DISK DRILL.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 643,829, dated February 20, 1900. Application tiled August 26,1899. SerialNo. 728,641. (No model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. SEsrEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk Drills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of disk drills, and has for its object the provision of a concave disk provided With a suitable hub substantially coneshaped, of a sleeve on which said hub is carried, and in the provision of a cone-shaped spindle projecting out from and forming a part of the boot in which the grain-spout is carried, and of certain other details hereinafter more fully described.
That my invention may be more fully understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure I is an elevation of my improved disk and its coactin g parts. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same somewhat enlarged. Fig. 3 is a cross-section. Fig. 4 is a detailed view.
In the drawings, A represents a concave disk provided with a hub a on its concave surface. d is a cone-shaped bearing extending out from the hub a and through the disk to a suitable point beyond.
B is a sleeve on which the bearing rotates, which is also cone-shaped and is provided with a flange b. On its enlarged end the boot is provided with a cone-shaped spindle C, on which the sleeve B is carried, and is further provided With a sand-box formed of the circumferential flange extension C', which is slipped over and has a bearing relation with the cone-shaped extension a', and c is an oilcup which forms a part of the sand-box.
D is a cap or washer slipped in a depression provided in the hub d, and d is a bolt retaining the parts in proper relation to each other.
yOne object in view is to provide a journalsupport for disk seeders which Will be perfectly free from any danger of dirt or sand getting onto the spindle, which eventually Wears away the same and causes the same to clog; and a further object is to provide, as has been shown, a much larger bearing-surface for the hub of the disk which gives little chance of wearing away and presents a perfectly-rigid disk in its rotation and stops all Wabbling of the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a disk drill, the combination with a concave disk provided With a substantiallycone-shaped hub, of a cone-shaped spindle projecting out from and forming a part of the grain-boot, a removably-carried sleeve interposed between said spindle and the hub of the disk and forming abearing therefor, a-
circumferentially-carried ange around said spindle and forming a covering for the hub of the disk, in the manner as and for the purpose described.
2.' In a disk drill, the combination with the concave disk A, provided with the hub a, and the cone-shaped bearing a', extending rearwardly through said disk, the removably-carried sleeve B, journaled on the spindle O, of the sand-box formed of the circumferential auge extensionl C, and the rectangular bolt d, andoil-cup c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a grain-drill, the combination with a support having a disk trunnion and a hubseat provided with an annular ange of a removable sleeve having a notched ange and a disk having attached thereto ahub provided with a groove adapted to receive the ange around the seat in theframe-support, all substantially as specified.
4t. The combination, with a rotating disk arranged at an angle to the line of draft provided with a hub attached thereto having an annular groove in one end and an annular seat in the other end, of a support provided With a seat therein and an annular ange surrounding the lseat and a trunnion extending out of said seat and a removable sleeve intervening between the tru'nnion and the hub, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, with a rotating disk arranged at an angle to the line of draft provided With a hub attached thereto having an annular groove in one end and an annular seat in the other end, of a support provided IOO with a seat therein having,` a lug in the bottom of the seat and an annular flange surrounding the seat and a trunnion extending out of Said seat and a removable sleeve provided with a notched Hang@ intervening between the trnnnion and the hub, substantially as specified.
G. The combination, with a rotating disk arranged at an angle to the line of draft provided with a hub attached thereto having an annular `groove in one end and an annular seat in the other end, of a support provided with a seat therein having a lng in the bottom of the seat and an annular flange surround- CHARLES P.
