SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,522, dated February 13, 1900.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE MOKEROHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in pipe-wrenches; and its object is to provide a wrench of simple and durable construction which may be readily adj usted to several sizes of pipe or other objects, the adjustable jaw of which is normally held in contact with the object to be operated upon.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described andclaimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation thereof. Fig.
2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3, Fig. 2. a modification.
Referring to said drawinge by letters of reference, A is the stationary jaw, tubular at one end, as at A, and provided with alongitudinal slot at intermediate said tubular portion A and the working end a. Said slot is adapted to receive the arm B of the adjustable jaw 13, which arm is provided upon its inner edge with a series of notches 0, any one of which is adapted to engage with a pin or rivet D, secured to and intermediate the walls of the slot at, near the forward end thereof.
Secured to the walls of the slot a, near the upper edge thereof and back of the arm B, is a second pin E, which serves as a pivot for a dog F, having a long downwardly-projecting arm f, adapted to bear upon the arm B of the jaw B at a point beneath the pivot D, and a short substantially horizontal arm f, upon which bears the end of a spring-strip G, which projects into the tubular portion A and is preferably recurved therein and secured in any suitable manner to the wall of said tu- Fig; 4 is a section through bular portion, as by a screw 9. If desired, this tubular portion may be threaded internally to permit the same to be screwed upon a handle or other desired object.
In operation the jaw B is adjusted to any desired distance from the stationary jaw by pressing the arm B backward. This will cause the dog F to swing backward upon its pivot until the notch is released from the pin D. The arm may then be slid within the slot at until a desired notch registers with the pin D, and the spring G, bearing upon the dog F, will throw the arm forward as soon as pressure is removed therefrom, bringing the notch G into engagement with the pin D. It is obvious that rearward swing of the jaw is prevented by the spring-pressed dog, while the forward movement thereof is limited by the lower forward end a of the slot a, as well as by the intermediate or pivotal portion of the dog F.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modified form of wrench. In said figure the spring-pressed dog is dispensed with and a spring-metal strip H, cast in the handle, is substituted therefor, the end of said strip normally bearing upon the rear edge of the arm of the adjustable jaw. This construction is especially adapted for small wrenches.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred forms of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wrench, the combination of the slotted, stationary jaw, the adjustable jaw having a notched arm projecting through the slot, and a pin in said slot normally engaging with one of said notches and a curved spring rigidly secured within the stationary jaw and normally bearing upon said arm, substantially as described.
2.
