vGEORGE FLlNT, )F LOW'llLli.A MASSACHUSETTS Lette/'.5' Patent No. 64,301, dated April P50, 1867. I
IMPROVEMENT IN PARLOR SKATBS.
@11e Stintino moet to' in tlgese iettus 'lzituzt mit -nmking putt .of the smut.
TO ALL WHOM 1T HAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE FLINT, et' Lowell, in the county ot' Middlesex, und' State of Massachusetts, have invented new und useful Improvements in Parlor'Skat'es; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, und to the letters of reference marked thereon. i
The nature of my invention consists in providingu skate with three wheels or runiiers, the middle one being so placed that it will enable the skater to turn from a straight line in any direction with ease, without any inconvenience.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use luy invention, I will proceed to describe its construetion and operation. i' l Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved skate.
Figure 2 represents u longitudinal section of the saine.
a represents the stock b c and tl the wheels or runners; c e e the bearings or gudgeons; fthe wheel or ruimer stand, and g 7L and g the journals.V Thestock a is prepared in the usual way, with suitable slots or inortises for passing through the fastening-straps. The standf, which receives the wheels, is then cast in one piece, with finished journals g t and y, the journal h heilig a little below a line drawn through the centres of the journals g y or the journals g L and g may be on a line, and the centre wheel e a little larger. The wheels e and d being finished to the saine size, are placed in the standf. lhe nished bearing or gudgeonse c' e aire passed through thejournals g L and g on one side of the standf, through the wheels I) c and Z into the opposite journals, and can be made fast in either the journals or wheels. The stundf is then fastened t0 the under side of the stock (L by screws or any other means. Much ditl'ieulty has been experienced heretofore in parlor skates, arising from the greet dilieulty in the skater being unable to control his course o r direction out of astraight line. '.lhe turning apparatus in the ska-tes being complicated und unsuited to the object required7 often undinany times brings the skater to astanti-still for the purpose of changing his course, thusv arresting and losing the momentum ofthe body acquired when running on a straight line. In my improved skate, the middle wheel c is lower, and so placed in the standfof the skate that the skater is ena-bled completely to balance himself` on the saine.A By' so doing, the bearing surface of this one wheel being so snm-ll, gives the skater full and Yentire'tontrol to change his 'course' in any direction, whether on u curve or angle, and at thesume time fully retaining the momentum of his body/.previously acquired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I claim the middle wheel or runner e, in combination with the wheels I und d, arranged substantially as herein described and for the purpose fully set forth.
. GEORGE FLINT.
