-eEoEeE w; EEOWNE, or NEW YORK, N. Y." Letters Patent No. 64,280, dated .April 30, 1867.
IMPROVBD ROW-LOCK.
"lO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCEBN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BROW'NE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a. new and improved Row-Lock; ,and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skillcdin the art to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents anl end view of my improved row-lock, showing it secured to gun'wale ofa boat.
Figure 2 is a side view of the saine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a row-lock which is attached by a swivel to a plate that is hinged to the inside of the gunwale oi a. boat in sucha man'ncr that when the oars are not on the thole-pin the same will swing back, so as to be suspended from the gunwale on the inside of the boat. When the oars are on the thole-pin, the same will be held upon the upper edge of the gunwale by the weight and action ot' the ours; They object of this invention is to so attach the .thole-pins to the boat that the same will be self-adjustingg that is to say, that they will not be securely attached to the upper edge of the gunwale, butl will be hinged. to the same, so that as the oars' are removed they will drop hack, and will prevent the gunwale from being broken by the tholes coming in contact with an obstacle outside. The device should furthermore be such that the tholes can be easily removed from the boat when the latter is to be laid up.- v
A represents the gunwale of a boat. To the under side of the same is secured by means of bolts-or screws :a plate, B, made of any suitable kind of metal. 'IoV the outer edge of the plate B is hinged an elbow-plate, C, which can be folded so as to enclose the gunwale A, as is shown in hg. 1. To the upper arm of the plate C is swivellcd a thole, D, of usual construction. The pin a, which connects the plates B and C, can be drawn out when desired to remove the plate C and the thole. In tig. 1 the plate C is represented by red lines as hanging down. When it is desired to retain the tholes up, even when the oars are not used, a small pin, b, (shown in red 'in iig. 2,) passing through, the plate C into the gunwalc, or any other sui-table device, may be used for the purpose. Instead of securing the plate B to the under side of the gnnwale, it may as well be secured to its vinner side; the plate C would then have but one wing, but the whole would operate similar to the device shown in the drawings. By the use of the plate B,which is bolted or screwed to the gunwale7 the latter is strengthened, while it is weakened by the tholefpin passing through it, as is now generally done. Whenever the boat comes in collision with anything striking against the row-locks, the latter will not be bent or broken, nor will the gunwale be broken, but the row-'locks will simply swing back, as is shown by red lines' in fie. 1.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The arrangement and combination of the angular plate C, centrally pivoted thole D, and plate B, secured to the gunwale of the boat, as herein set forth.
G rEO. BROWNE.
