UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHANIEL BOTT OI-IADWIOK, OF STOCKPORT, ENGLAND.
BOX-COVERING MACHINE.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Ne. 642,517, dated January 30, 1900.
Application filed July 25, 1899.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be itknown thatI, NATHANIEL BOTT CHAD- WICK, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Stockport, in the county of Chester, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Covering Machines, (for which I have made applicationfor a patent in Great Britain, No. 22,506, dated October 26, 1898,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in what are known as box-covering machines for applying at one operation one or more covering-strips of paper, cloth, or other material to a paper or other box or lid. In such a machine the box or lid to be covered is placed on a suitably-shaped form secured adjustably on a shaft driven by the machine, and the strip of paper covering the box and lid is cut ofi at the proper point by knives actuated by a rod which connects one of the knives with the cam which gives the motion at the right time and which connecting-rod has to be adjusted in length to every varying size of box, which adjustment to get the lever to actuate the cut-off knife always at the same length is very difficult. In these machines also the strips of paper or other material which are placed on the machine cannot easily be moved sidewise to get them in a line with the box being covered, and it is necessary for the operator to stop the machine to adjust the strips and move them to the position required on the glue-roller.
The object of my invention is to overcome the said defects, and I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying two sheets of drawings, in which- Figure 1, Sheet I, is a side view, Fig. 2 a plan, and Fig. 3, Sheet II, an end view, of a complete machine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 1 is a sectional side view of the cutting arrangement of the machine, and Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively a detached side and end view of a modification of my invention.
Similar letters and numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention and referring to Figs. 1, 1 2, and 3, Sheets I and II, I dispense with the connecting-rod and place the contact member or cam a, Which actuates the Serial No. 725,080. (No model.)
cut-off, on a shaft 1), Working at a right angle with the form-shaft c and mountedin bearings d 6, formed on a segmental bracket f. This bracket is fulcrumed to the axis of the form shaft c and can be raised and lowered and by means of a bolt g clamped to the frame 72. in any desired position. The said bracket is formed with a bed i, which carries a slide 70, in which is mounted the shaft Z, carrying the knives m n, which cut the paper used for covering the box.
The shaft b may be driven from the formshaft 0 by bevel-wheels 0 p and is either made v square in section, as shown in the drawings,
or round, with a keyway running its whole length in such a way that the cam a is capable of being slid along to any part of the shaft 19, and as the knives m n are moved higher or lower and at any point have the same efiect on the cut-off knife or without the intervention of a connecting-rod.
The cut-off knife m is furnished at one end with a bowl q, kept in contact with the cam a by means of a spring and lever a" ands. (See Fig. 1
The slide it may be moved on the bed i by means of a rack and pinion t u, the former being secured to the bed i and the latter carried by the slide is and rotated by the hand- Wheel 1;, a screw and nut to being provided to clamp the slide 70 to the bed '5 when adj usted. Another way is instead of connecting the form-shaft c by bevel-wheels to the cutter-shaft (see Figs. 4. and 5) to have a cam 00 on the form-shaft c and a stud y to work against it on the cutter-shaft b,which is under the tension of a spring b whereby oscillating motion is imparted to said shaft 1) at each revolution of the form-shaft c and the said outoff shaft carrying an operating member in the shape of a boss .2, adapted to slide thereon and oscillate therewith, and being connected with the cut-off knife m by a short link 1 will give the required motion, and thus dispense also with the said connecting-rod. I also fix the brackets 2, holding the reels of paper3, on the frame of the glue-box 4 and the latter on the framework h of the machine in such a way that the operator by means of rack 5 and pinion 6 orotherwise can move the said glue-box and with it the paper sidewise whenever required to adjust the paper in a line with the box or lid being operated upon from the working end of the machine. For instance, I may adapt the frame h, carrying the strip-rollers and glue-box, to slide upon the table? and secure to the side of the said frame the rack 5, While the shaft 8, carrying the pinion, I mount in bearings 9, secured to the said table.
In other box-covering machines the adjustment of the strip has been done from the back of the machine, while by the improvements described the adjustment of the strip is effected from the Working end of the machine, and thus the necessity of the attendant Walking around the machine dispensed with. I
The form-shaft c is actuated by means of foot-pedal 10, ratchet-Wheel 11 and pawl and 12, connecting-rods 13 and 14, and lever 15, as will be readily understod.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a box-covering machine, the combi nation With the form-shaft and strip-cutting knives, of a shaft adapted to be rotated by said form-shaft, and a member suitably carried on said shaft and held against rotary movement and adapted to operate said knives, substantially as described.
2. In a box-covering machine, the combination with the form-shaft c and strip-cu tting knives m, nof a shaft 1) rotated from the form= shaft 0 and carrying a boss or cam a adapted to slide on the said shaft and to rotate there- With'so as to actuate the cut-ofi knife on in any position, all substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
NATHANIEL BO'lT (lllADWICK.
