To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I,'HENRY H. VAUGHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohioago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in J ournal-Box Lids; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an exterior perspective view of a journal-box lid embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the under surface of the journal-box lid shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. I Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the exterior surface of the journal-box lid, the spring thereof removed; and Fig. 5 is a detached view of the spring.

My invention relates to the construction of that class of lids for car journal-boxes wherein a detachable lid-spring is combined with a lid having a spring-slot and a swell or housing for the lid-spring, and has for its object to simplify the construction and combination of the lid and its spring and effect such a connection between the same that the spring may be readily applied after the lid has been secured to the journal-box and will thereafter be effectively held against accidental displacement while in service.

To this end the invention, generally stated, consists in the combination, with a journalbox lid having a spring-slot and a foot-stop for the spring in line with said spring-slot, of a lid-spring in part of greater width than the spring-slot and provided with lateral offsets or shoulders adapted to engage the end walls of the spring-slot, whereby and by means of the foot-stop the lid-spring is held against accidental displacement while in service and its application to and removal from the lid are facilitated.

I will now proceed to describe my invention more fully, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may apply the same.

axle journal-boxes, said lid having the central swell or bulge a, which forms the housing for the usual lug or pintle-knuckle of the journal-box and also the housing for the upper portion of the lid-spring, said swell having a transverse slot 1 at its dependent portion for the passage (or entrance) of the lid spring, which spring when in position substantially closes said transverse slot 1 and prevents the entrance of dust or grit.

Immediately below and in line with the transverse slot 1 is a transverse rib of slightly greater length than the spring-slot, which constitutes the foot-stop 2 for the spring, and projecting upward at right angles thereto and at the ends thereof are secondary ribs or lateral spring-stops 3 3, which prevent the lateral displacement of the lower or exposed end of the lid-spring.

The lid will be provided on each side of the swell or housing a with the usual-pintle-eyes 0t and, if desired, may be provided with the side and bottom ribs a a a 4 indicates the lid-spring of a length equal to the distance from the foot-stop 2 to the upper edge of the lid between the pintle-eyes thereof or sufficiently long to extend up to and rest upon the central pintle-knuckle of the car-axle box when the lid is in position. This lid-spring 4 at its lower end is slightly wider than the length of spring-slot l and at points above its lower end equal to the distance from foot-stop 2 to spring-slot 1 is provided with offsets 0r shoulders 5 5 where the spring 4 is narrowed to enter the spring-slot -1, from which point to its upper end the lidspring may be given a slight taper, if desired.

In applying said lid to thecar-axle box the lid will usually be adjusted thereon before the lid-spring is applied and the pintle passed through the lateral pintle-eyes a to secure the lid to the axle-box, after which the lidspring 4 is passed through the spring-slot 1 from without and forced upward until its upper end takes over the central knuckle of the car-axle box, whereupon its further upward movement will be arrested by the shoulders 5 coming in contact with the end Walls of transverse spring-slot 1, and its lower end will drop down in front of foot-stop 2 and between the lateral spring-stops 3 3, and the lid-spring will be held securely in proper relation and combination with the lid so long as the lid remains attached to the axle-box.

The lid may be produced in any desired manner, but preferably from sheet metal by stamps or dies, to which method its form is admirably adapted.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a journal-box lid having a transverse spring-slot and a footstop exterior of the lid and in line with the spring-slot, of a detachable lid-spring having shoulders which engage the walls of the spring-slot; substantially as and for the purposes specified.

2. The combination with a journal-box lid having a transverse spring-slot and on its exterior a foot-stop in line with the spring-slot and lateral spring-stops at right angles to the foot-stop, of a detachable lid-spring having lateral shoulders to engage the end walls of the spring-slot; substantially as and for the purposes specified.
