SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,805, dated January 23, 1900.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMos O. STEERE, a citi- 'zen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide an economical and efficient air-heater, and while my invention is particularly adapted for a heater in which gas is employed as a fuel it can with proper modifications be used with coal, wood, or other fuel.
In the ordinary forms of stove there is a great waste of fuel, due to the rapid flow of the products of combustion to the chimney and to the fact that the products of combustion are not made to heat large areas of heating-surfaces. I remedy these faults by making the products of combustion take a sinuous course to the outlet and providing in the path of their flow large areas to be heated. Further, I incline these air-heating surfaces so that the flow of air over or through the surfaces is facilitated.
My invention consists in the improved construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating one embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a transverse Vertical sectional view, parts being broken out to show details of construction. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, parts being broken out to show details.
In the form shown the body or drum of the stove includes vertical parallel side pieces 1 and parallel end pieces 2,c0nnecting the sides. To the side pieces are riveted two series of pipes or tubes 3, arranged in inclined planes intersecting each other at the middle of the tubes. The ends of the tubes communicate with the exterior of the stove through openings 1 along the top and bottom of the sides, and the pipes of the two series alternate with each other.
Extending between the ends 2 of the stove lar space between the upper portions of thetwo series of tubes is an angular plate or fender 5, the parts or wings of which lie in planes parallel to those upper portions. This angular plate is riveted to the ends 2 of the drum or body of the stove; but its. edges do not reach to the sides of the stove, thereby permitting the products of combustion to pass between those edges and the sides of the stove to an outlet 2 in the rear wall of the stove.
The air-openings along the lower portions of the sides of the stove may be protected by a hood 6.
In the lower part of the stove is arranged the burner 7, consisting in the instance shown of a pipe arranged so as to lie under the lower ends of the tubes, and the burner may be lighted through an opening covered, if desired, by a small door 8. Any obvious and suitable arrangement for supplying air to sup: port combustion may be provided. v
By the arrangement of the pipes 3 and plates 4. and 5 it will be observed that the products of combustion will flow along the entire length of the tubes, heating them to a high degree, and that by inclining the tubes 3 in the manner shown the heated air readily rises and flows out of said tubes, rapidly heating the surrounding atmosphere.
A further important advantage of the construction shown is that different sizes of stove may be made by varying the lengths of the sides 1 and plates 4 and 5 only, thereby lessening the cost of manufacture, when different sizes are desirable.
