COMBINED SMOKE AND GAS-CONSUMER AND FUEL-FEEDER FOR FURNACES.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. DECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Smoke and Gas Consumer and Fuel-Feeder for Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Heretofore great objection has arisen to furnaces using bituminous coal in and near cities, owing to the fact that the smoke and soot arising therefrom discolored objects with which they came in contact. Also a large percentage of the heat-prod ucing gases contained in coal are'lost through non-combustion and then escape through the stack. I am enabled to overcome these objections by taking the impoverished gases, smoke, and
' cinders as they pass upward or into the stack,
combining them with oxygen and pulverized coal, and reintroducing the whole into the furnace to be burned in suspension. I'am able to accomplishthe above by employing certain novel devices and combination of devices herein shown, de'scribed, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawingsIhave shown in Figure 1 an ordinary steam-boiler furnace to which my invention has been applied, and in Fig. 2 a furnace with a modification of my invention applied thereto, both figures being in part vertical longitudinal sectional views.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A represents the boiler, and A the usual masonry around the same.
A A are the doors which open, respectively,into the fire-chamber B and ash-pit B.
A is the smoke stack, provided with a damper a as shown in Fig. 1, while in Fig. 2 A represents a receiving-chamber.
D is an exhaust-pipe, with its fore end opening into and leading from A and connecting witharotary fan E, which is operated bya belt and pulley, as shown, or byany other desirable means. The pipe D is provided with an adjustable valve f. The fan E in turn connects with the blow or delivery pipe D the opposite end of which opens into the chamber B through door A to which it is adjustably secured by any convenient means. D is provided with an arm (I, having its end screw-threaded, so as to allow the attaching of a hose-coupler.
d is a screw-threaded opening through which is introduced the water-pipe a, provided with sprayer a.
c is a switch or valve used to close pipes d or D as desired. 4
F is an ordinary hose-pipe provided at one end with a nozzle and at the other with a suitable coupling to secure it to end of pipe d.
G is a pulverizer or hopper or feed-chute.
I do not wish to be confined in the operation of my invention to the use of either of the modified devices for supplying the pulverized coal or dust, as it is obvious each in itself is simply a means of accomplishing an end and embraces no essential novelty. As shown in Fig. 1, the pulverizer may be operated by a belt and pulley or in any other suitable manner. The pulverizer or hopper or chute G may be located so as to either open into D as in Fig. 1, or into D, as in Fig. 2. g is an opening or feed-pipe through which the coal-dust is fed from G.
g is a valve or gate to regulate the supply of coal-dust through g.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The pipe D is detached in order to allow the building of the initial fire on the grate b. The pipe is then reconnected with the furnace in operative position. The draftdamper at A is then closed, as is alsothe damper (1 in smoke-stack. The fan E is then started, and the hot smoke and deoxygenized gases, cinders, &c., generated by the fire are drawn over the bridge-wall to the rear end of the boiler, thence through the fines of the same out and into the stack or chamber A, and thence into exhaust-pipe D and fan E, being supplied at f with the requisite amount of oxygen. Said reoxygenized hot gases, smoke, and solids are passed on into blast-pipe D by the action of fan E, where they become mixed with the pulverized coal or dust at g,
impregnating, partially coking, andaiding in the combustion of the same, and finally delivering the whole mass into the fire-chamber B there to be consumed in suspension.
In Fig. 2 I have introduced the pulverized coal into pipe D instead of D and have done away with the stack and the damper a as showing modifications of my invention.
It will be seen that in the use of myinvention those substances which have heretofore resisted combustion, as well as the hot and impoverished gases which have been allowed to go to waste, are utilized and resubjected to ever-increasing heat until absolute combustion is attained.
hen it is desired to rid the ash-box or other receptacle of soot or other accumulations, the supply of coal is shut off by closing valves 9 and D by valve 6, attaching hose-pipe F to arm d, turning on the water through pipe a, and starting fan E.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In a smoke and gas consuming device for furnaces, the exhaust-pipe D connecting with chamber A and provided with Valve f, in combination with fan E and blast-pipe D provided with feed-pipe gand valve g; said pipe D connecting with pipe D and being adjustably attached at its far end to door A and opening into chamber B substantially as shown and described.
2. In a smoke and gas consuming device for furnaces, the exhaust-pipe D connecting with chamber A and provided with valve f, in combination with fan E and blast-pipe D provided with feed-pipe g, connecting with hopper G, and valve g; said pipe D connecting with pipe D and being adjustably attached at its far end to door A and opening into chamber 13", substantially as shown and described.
3. In a smoke and gas consuming device for furnaces, the exhaust-pipe D provided with valvefand connecting at one end with stack A provided with damper o in combination with fan E and blast-pipe D connecting with pipe D and provided with feed-pipe g and valve 9 and arm d having a screw-threaded end connecting with hose-pipe F and screwthreaded orifice d and valve 6, said pipe D being adjustably'attached at its far end to door A and opening into chamber 13 substantially as shown and described.
4. In a smoke and gas consuming device for furnaces, the exhaust-pipe D provided with valve f and connecting with stack A provided with damper a in combination with fan E and blast-pipe D connecting with pipe D and adjustably attached to its far end to door A? and opening into chamber B and connected with hopper G by feed-pipe g and valve g and provided with arm (I having valve e screwthreaded orifice d and a screw-threaded end and connecting with pipe F, substantially as described.
5. In a smoke and gas consuming device for furnaces, the combination of the exhaust-pipe D provided with valve f and opening into chamber A, and the blast-pipe D connecting with pipe D and adjustably attached to door A and opening into chamber B and the fan E, and the pulverizer G provided with feedpipe g and valve 9' all located substantially as shown and described.
6. In a smoke and gas consuming device for furnaces, the combination of the exhaust-pipe D provided wit-h valve f and opening into stack A provided with damper a and the blast-pipe D connecting with pipe -D and adjustably attached to door A and opening into chamber 15* and provided with arm (1 having a screw-threaded orifice d and screwthreaded end and valve 6 and connecting with hose-pipe F, and the pulverizer G provided with feed-pipe g and valve 9 all being located substantiallyas shown and described.
7. The combination of the blast-fan E with the pipe D provided with valve 6 and arm (Z provided with screw-threaded end and screwthreaded orifice d, and hose-pipe F, and water-pipe at having screw-threaded perforated nozzle a substantially as shown and described.
- 8. In a smoke and gas consumer for furnaces, the combination of pipe D provided with valve fand connecting with stack A with fan E connecting with pipe D provided with valve e and arm (1 screw-threaded at one WILLIAM N. DECKER.
