Be it known that LVVILLIAM H. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Stovepipe- Fastener, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to stovepipe-fasteners for securing a stovepipe in the due of a chimney, and has for its object to provide improved adjustable means for engagement with the chimney, so that a single device may be readily fitted to chimneys having walls of different thicknesses. It is furthermore designed to firmly support two or more sections of pipe adjacent to the chimney and remove the strain from the inner end of the pipe-section, which is fitted in the flue-opening.
To these ends the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction may be made -within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof applied to support a stovepipe in the iiue of a chimney. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device.
Corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings are designated by like characters of reference.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 and 2 designate, respectively, front and rear clamping-bands, which are adapted to be fitted to the stovepipe-sections, and are each formed from a single length of strap metal bent into circular form having its opposite ends formed into ears 3, which are held together by means of a suitable boltA or other similar fastening 4. These clamping-bands are connected together by means of a connecting-bar 5, which has its rear end located between the ears of the rear band and connected thereto by means of the bolt 3. This bar is also made of strap metal and hasv its forward end twisted into a plane at substantially right angles to that of the bar, as at (5, and secured Hat against the under side of the front band by means of a suitable bolt 7. Thus the two clamping-bands are firmly connected together and form a rigid support.
Fitted exteriorly to the front clampingband upon the upper and lower sides at diametrically opposite points is a pair of substantially L-shaped clamps 8 and 9, respectively, the hooked portions of which project in advance of the band and extend in opposite directions, the upper one upwardly and the lower one downwardly. The shank of each clamp is provided with a longitudinal slot 10 for the reception of a suitable fastening device whereby the clamp may be longitudinally adj ustably secured to the band. The lower clamp 9 is secured -in place by means of the fastening 7, which secures the connecting-bar 5 to the forward band, while the upper clamp is secured in place by means of a separate bolt 11. Another substantially L-shaped clamp 12 vis secured to the under side of the forward band by means of the single bolt '7. The shank of this latter clamp is longer than that of the others, so that the hooked portion thereof is extended in advance of the shorter clamps and then extends downwardly in longitudinal alinement with the lower clamp 9.
The application and operation of the device are shown in Fig. 2, in which 13 designates one wall of a chimney, having the usual flue-opening 14. The stovepipe-section 15 is embraced by the front band 1, which is firmly clamped thereon by tightening the fastening 4, and the adjacent section 16 is passed through the rear band and engaged with the rear end of the front section. lt will be noted that only the front band is adjustable, as it is not necessary to clamp the device to the other section, as the rear band is intended to support the line of piping. The clamp 12 is passed through the flue-opening 14, and the hooked end thereof is engaged against the inner side of the wall of the chimney, the shank of the clamp fitting iiush against the side of the flue-opening, after which the upper and lower clamps are adjusted so as to firmly engage against the outer side of the chimney-wall.
Thus the device may be firmly fixed to the wall of the chimney, the long clamp preventing the device and the stovepipe from being pulled outward and the other clamps. preventing the same from being shoved into the chimney-Hue.
As clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, .the first section of pipe is clamped by the front baud and terminates short of the rear band, so that the second section of pipe may be supported by the rear band, thereby relieving the first section of the Weight and consequent stra-in of the remainder of the pipe-line. It Will be understood that the connecting-bar 5 may be as long as desired, and both clamps may be fitted to a single length of pipe. By forming the connecting-bar of flat strap metal the rear end thereof may be conveniently held between the ears of the rear band, and by twisting the forward end of said bar the latter may be connected to the exterior of the forward band, leaving the interior thereof free of obstructions, and at the same time the upper longitudinal edge of the bar is adapted to engage against the stovepipe and effectually support the latter.
Having thus described the invention,\vl1at is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
In a stovepipe-fastener, the combination of front and rear clamping-bands, each clamp formed from a single flat metal strap bent into circular form, and having the opposite ends thereof formed into opposite ears, and fastenings connecting said ears, a flat oonmeeting-bar, having its rear end held between the ears of the rear clamp, and its front end twisted into a plane at substantially right angles to that of the bar, and fastened eXteriorly to the front clamp, diametrically opposite and substantially L-shaped clamps secured to the front clamp, and another longer substantially L-shaped clamp secured to the front clamp, and alined longitudinally with one of the former L-shaped clamps, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
