Be itkncwn that we,RoBERT ALLIsoN HALL and EDWARD A. GRIFFITH, citizens of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates -to improvements in buttons.
Among the objects of the invention are to provide a button of cheap, durable, and simple construction, to provide a button with a head which may be either iiexibly or rigidly secured to the shank, and to provide means for securely fastening the parts to the garment or fabric to which the button is to be attached.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the button attached to the fabric, the latter being in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of same. Fig. 3 is a plan view.

The head l of the but-ton consists of a circular disk with a central hole 5, and is secured to the hollow shank 2 by means of the rivet 3. The stem 6 of' the rivet 3 is inserted through the hole 5 of the head of the button and then into the contracted opening of the upper end of the hollow shank 2, and is secured therein by riveting or burrowing the lower end of the said stem 6 against the inner side of the contracted opening of the hollow shank 2, as shown in Fig. 2. As shown in the accompanying drawings, the head of the button is loosely secured; but it is obvious that the same may be rigidly secured by pressing the rivet 3 down into the hollow shank until the head l is firmly clamped between the said hollow shank 2 and the head of the rivet 3. The hole 5 of the button-head is made large enough to allow the said head to revolve freely on the stem 6 and also to tilt at an angle to the said stem, which allows the button to be inserted into the buttonhole more freely than when the head is rigid. The hollow shank 2 has a base '7, which rests on the fabric to which the button is to be attached.
The stud 4 of the button consists of a vertical post 8 and a base 9. The said post 8 is provided with an annular tapered iiange 10, which is forced into the inner wall of the hollow shank 2 and holds the parts firmly to the fabric.
To secure the button to the fabric, the post 8 is inserted through the fabric and into the hollow shank 2 and the two parts are drawn closely together until the fabric is firmly clamped between the base 7 and the base 9. As shown in'Figs. l and 2, the walls of the hollow shank 2-are then pressed together by a suitable, tool, which causes the ange 10 to cut into the inner wall ofthe said shank 2, and thereby firmly secure the parts together on the fabric.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim isl. The combination of the hollow shank, 2; a rivet, 3, havinga stem, 6, secured in the said hollow shank, 2; a head, l, which is free to revolve on the stem, 6; and means to secure the parts to the fabric.
2. The combination of the head, l, having a central hole, 5; a hollow shank; 2, having a base, a rivet, 3, to secure the said head and shank together; and a stud, 4, having an annular flange, 10, and a base, 9, to secure the button to the fabric.
3. The combination of the head, l, having a central hole, 5; a hollow shank, 2, having a contracted opening at the upper end and a base, 7, at the lower end; a rivet, 3, to secure the said shank and head together; and a stud, 4, having an annular fiange, 10, and a base, 9, to secure the button to the fabric.
